New York — Mary Tyler Moore, the star of TV’s beloved “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” whose comic realism helped revolutionize the depiction of women on the small screen, has died.

Moore died Wednesday with her husband and friends nearby, her publicist, Mara Buxbaum, said. She was 80.

Moore gained fame in the 1960s as the frazzled wife Laura Petrie on “The Dick Van Dyke Show.” In the 1970s, she created one of TV’s first career-woman sitcom heroines in “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.”

She won seven Emmy awards over the years and was nominated for an Oscar for her 1980 portrayal of an affluent mother whose son is accidentally killed in “Ordinary People.”

She had battled diabetes for many years. In 2011, she underwent surgery to remove a benign tumor on the lining of her brain...

LOVED her ! What a beautiful, classy actress. :(

One of my fav. episodes on her show was the one that introduced "The Fonz", aka Henry Winkler ---the one where he's invited for dinner (I think), and there is just enough Lasagna --but one guy (Ed Asner's character ?) takes two pieces... fun times.

Rest gently, Ms. Moore !

oh, I loved my Mary . My baby sister and I watched her every week.

RIP. Mary Tyler Moore has been one of my favorite actresses. I love her and Valerie Harper together. Read the story about Mary's fight with a co-op board to have a nest put back on the ledge of her 5th Ave apt building. The nest was the home to Pale Male and Lola. Two Red Tale Hawks. Pale Male has resided there for 24 yrs now. Hes on his 8th mate.

Youtube Mary Tyler Moore surprise.

Wow...thanks for directing me to that. That's pretty much how a lot of us young girls thought back then. We wanted to be Mary.

What a loss. But what an inspiration she was to so many of us.

Rest easy, Ms. Moore. :rose:

I always loved the closing credits of her show, with the kitten meowing like the MGM lion roaring. Watch for it about 30 seconds here:

It wasn't lasagna---it was Veal Prince Orloff. Remember Sue Ann Nivens telling Mary that they had to eat at exactly 8pm because if you leave Veal Price Orloff in the oven too long he dies?

That was one of my favorite episodes too. My favorite scene was Ted relaying his sad story about not being invited to a party when he was in high school.

The characters on that show were all icons.

That sounds so "Mary". I wonder if someone in the back of the chapel was choking on laughter, like in my favorite MTM episode. What was it? The death of Chuckles the Clown, who was run over in a parade by a giant peanut?? Something like that. For ages, I would laugh to myself any time it came to mind. The absurd humor, and MTM's perfect comedic timing, made it a priceless moment in television history.

Chuckle in peace, Mar'. I'm laughing now thinking back on that performance.
