QUEBEC CITY (AP) — People have died in a Sunday evening in a shooting at a mosque in the provincial capital of Quebec City, police say.

Authorities did not specify the number of fatalities

Quebec City police spokesman Constable Pierre Poirier said two suspects were arrested.

This mosque was in the news back in the summer....when someone dropped off a pig's head.

A pig's head left outside a Quebec City mosque is the latest in a string of incidents pointing to a rising tide of Islamophobia in the provincial capital and across Quebec, says a prominent anti-discrimination activist.

But he views the incidents as isolated acts, and in general, he said, the mosque has good relations with people in Quebec City. He said he's trying not to let the incident bother him.

This is so horrible. This is a disgrace. To kill people while they pray....I am disgusted.

Montreal police are stepping up patrols around any sites on the island that could be potential targets, a spokesperson told the Montreal Gazette late Sunday.
A vigil has already been planned in Montreal on Monday.
So far, Quebec City police have not specified the number of victims.
Police spokesperson Étienne Doyon told a brief press briefing police received a first call around 7:55 p.m. on Sunday, stating shots had been heard at the mosque.

said mostly men were gathered at the mosque for evening prayers.
Two suspects have been arrested, one of whom was apprehended after a chase that ended near l'île d'Orléans

"It seemed to me that they had a Quebecois accent. They started to fire, and as they shot they yelled, 'Allahu akbar!'

"There were even kids. There was even a three-year-old who was with his father."

Friends and bystanders around the security parameter stood huddled in the cold, incredulous, unable to believe such violence could occur in Quebec City, a city with a notoriously low crime rate.

Ben Abdallah, who often prays at the Ste-Foy mosque, described the event as “catastrophic. We never thought … but given the hateful speeches all around the planet, it can happen,” he said.
Hamid Nadji had friends who were inside the mosque at the time of the shooting. He spoke to them afterward, and described the scene as “a carnage.”
“From what we heard over the phone, one person had a weapon discharged in his face because he had wanted to jump on the man to stop him. And the three others died because they wanted to catch the man.”
He said the assailant went into the mosque a first time, then left to recharge his weapon and came back a second, then a third time.

Global news reported 11 injured NOT confirmed yet

At least one of the weapons used was an AK-47, which is banned in Canada.

One of the suspects was carrying an AK-47 assault rifle and one was aged 27, Le Soleil reported.

I think we have to hesitate to characterize this as an anti-muslim terrorist attack. It is definitely possible it is one faction of islam attacking another (such as sunni-shia), or more radicalized muslims attacking those they perceive to be not devout "enough", or too "mainstream".

Many news articles discuss that the attackers shouted "allahu akbar". That could be mocking words by the attackers, or could be one faction of muslims attacking another faction.

Regardless, to fire on praying people who weren't hurting anyone is cowardly and appalling.

It's simply too soon to tell if this is "anti-muslim violence", or "muslim on muslim" violence, and the authorities have clamped down information for the time being. I think it's very irresponsible for the canadian PM to be characterizing this as "anti muslim" attack at this point in time, unless he has more specific information to share with the public.

And here is an article about "fake news" that is being promoted:

http://heavy.com/news/2017/01/david...ers-twitter-account-troll-white-supremacists/

David Aurine & Mathieu Fornier Are NOT the Quebec City Mosque Shooting Suspects

tweet appearing to be from a Reuters breaking news account identified the gunmen in a terrorist attack on a Quebec City mosque as two white supremacists, named David Aurine and Mathieu Fornier.

But the account is fake. Its profile says it is a “Parody that’s not actually affiliated with Reuters in any way.”

The account was created in August 2016 and has previously tweeted fake news about mass shootings, including identifying the Fort Lauderdale airport gunman as alt-right personality Mike Cernovich. It also claimed Republican strategist Rick Wilson attempted an assassination Donald Trump, among other hoaxes connected to major news events.

The account has only two people following it, and follows 278. But the tweet was reposted more than 1,000 times in the hour after it was posted and the names spread quickly on social media.

The Daily Beast is among the news outlets to say Reuters was reporting Aurine and Fornier as the suspects. Its report links to the CBC, but it is not clear if the CBC also fell for the hoax.

Thanks for digging up the pictures of the mosque, Cariis.

News media desperately wants this attack to be carried out by "white supremacists", but I think the truth is going to be far different from what most of the msm is spinning.

Mounting evidence that this attack was carried out not by "white supremacists", but by muslims against muslims. There are links to the imam of the mosque at some sites where the imam is discussing some members of their congregation that have broken off from them to start a new mosque, because they thought the grand mosque was too secular or not devout enough. And then there is this:
