Please keep working on that. His protections just might have rolled into other counties. OR, we have another county with the same "protection" going on during that time. Like you I can't post it here yet. KWIM?

In 1976 the population of Conroe was close to 17,000. I doubt it would be that much more in 1979.

It's an hour and 40 mins. depending on traffic to get from Conroe to Galveston Island. This is not an unreasonable assumption to make distance wise. Much could depend on what kind of job a person had and how much free time he had.

I haven't taken a look at any time lines or checked out all the missiing or deceased women yet, but we could very well have at least one killer familiar with both territories, enough so that he felt completely comfortable operating in either locale. Obviously, some deaths have been attributed to certain people, but for the numerous others who remain unaccounted for as to their killers, we could look for a tie in between Galveston, Alvin, League City, Seabrook etc., and Montgomery County.

Thanks for all your work, JeannieC in looking up these old, cold cases. It's something that really needed doing, and is going to be so very helpful.

I want to add a very famous Texas case out of Montgomery Co. to this list, and that is the case of
Cheryl Dee Ferguson, a Bellville, TX volleyball player who was killed at Conroe High School August 23,1980. Clarence Brandley was framed, tried, convicted, and sentenced to death row for her murder, only to be released 10 years later. Two other names pop up as possible suspects, who like Brandley were employed at the school as janitors. I can't for the life of me understand why neither was ever charged, and one of them is possibly the killer of leisha Jackson, a Montgomery Co. girl. WTH was going on up in Montgomery County, and why haven't these men ever been charged? In the Ferguson case, the two were identified by eye witnesses as grabbing the girl who pleaded for help. In the other case, the possible perp lived a stone's throw from the victim, per info garnered from another site with similar focus as WS.

So here we have two cases with one possible perp involved in both. There are other murders that possibly fit. Wether or not this guy had any ties to the bays and beach locales, I haven't the foggiest as yet. But if not him, perhaps another possible perp might be out there who does have ties to both areas.
Great information! We'll have to get these girls listed here with pictures. Others might know something and can add to this. The more information we gather the better chance of solving these case.

HOPE LE IS READING! WE'RE HERE TO HELP!

An interesting pattern I noticed is that in five of the cases: Jane McDonald Crone, Daphne Darlene Browne, Brenda Maureen Hackett, Teresa Brignoni, and Gloria Ann Stephan , is that the victim was alone with her car when she was abducted and the perp used or moved the victim's car during the abduction. This is a rather unusual MO for a sexual predator. Most of them would have their own car and, if they used the victim's vehicle to transport the victim then abandoned the vehicle somewhere, they have the problem of getting back to their own car. How did they manage it? Most of the abandoned vehicles were near residential areas. Perhaps the perp had ties to them. One big advantage of moving the victim’s car would be to conceal where (and how) the abduction took place. We don’t know how any of these five actually went down.

The case of Cheryl Ferguson is very interesting. Another example of the problems Texas Law Enforcement was having at the time. I wonder what ever happened to
Dexter Robinson and Gary Acreman. Has anyone looked at either of them for any of the subsequent murders?

Are these articles about your mother's death? Two (2) articles are dated 9/17/1989 and the other 9/19/1989.

    Linnis A. Gibbons:

This is an article dated 2/6/1995. It includes a list of names that were in the obituary that day. The full text can be found in microfilm.

    http://www.chron.com/CDA/archives/ar...d=1995_1254778

This article is dated 09/20/1986. It refers to a Linnis Gibbons Jr. I was wondering if this is a relative of Linnis Gibbons Sr. maybe?

    http://www.chron.com/CDA/archives/ar...id=1986_267408

Is it possible to contact relatives or friends of Gibbons? Maybe if we dig deep enough, it will lead to new information that could reopen the case. I was also wondering if you had any pictures of your mom, Gibbons, or the other two women? If so could you upload them?

    Thank you!

Good post............as always! The car has always been a bone of contention for me. I wonder were these abductions, murders, two perps or; and this is where I keep going, was the perp driving a tow truck or a taxi?

Dexter Robinson and Gary Acreman..........I wonder the same thing.

WOW! So much information. We have Robinson who sold Amway and worked as a janitor at a school. At that time, Amway was sold door to door............

Acremen talked to Cheryl before her murder. A school janitor, taxi driver in Tx, long distance truck driver............

and of course Brandley, school janitor.

Then we have a non-responsive DA and over zealous LD tester!

Not an "innocent" one in the bunch!

    1980 Case # 80-2138
    Murder of Barbara Gale Whitten
July 8, 1980 – Wooded area, south of Roman Forest Blvd, New Caney, Texas
SYNOPSIS: At approximately 2:00 pm, a witness responded to the sight
of smoke in the area of the scene. Upon arrival, the witness observed what
appeared to be a log on fire and a 1976 – 1977 medium blue Chevrolet
Nova parked nearby. The Nova had what appeared to be two navy blue
racing stripes on the side. Two white males were observed closing the
vehicle trunk and upon entering the car, the males fled on Roman Forest
Blvd. MCSO Deputies responded and found that the fire involved a dead
body of a black female. Two freshly dug shallow holes were located
nearby. The victim was later identified by dental records as Barbara Gale
Whitten (23 yoa) from Wipprecht Street in Houston, Texas. An autopsy
revealed that she had been shot multiple times with a 22-caliber firearm.
In 1983, self-professed Serial Killer Henry Lee Lucas subsequently
confessed to several murders in Montgomery County, along with approx.
600 murders elsewhere. Investigators in 1983 thought that Lucas might
have been involved in Whitten’s murder. Lucas died in prison in 2001,
after his death sentence was commuted to life. Lucas had recanted his
confessions and it is believed that he is not responsible for most of the
    crimes he confessed too.

Unless they say that the car turned around and ran over her again to cause her death or to make sure she was dead.
I am beginning to believe this was nothing more than a hit and run.
Which in fact we do know it was a hit and run. For she was hit and the driver was never apprehended.

And depending if her injuries were more Consistent with those of someone being hit by a vehicle.
And not being Consistent with injuries sustained by falling out of or being pushed out of a moving vehicle causing death.

Which could explain them turning around and going back to see if she was alive or any indications of being alive.

If they could tell those were truck tires.
She may had been waiting for someone to pick her up where she was.
Perhaps in a truck without a camper on the bed as they used to call it.
Perhaps she got in the back in the bed and while in motion either fail or was push out of the back of the bed.

I wonder if they ever checked her friends to see if any of them owned a camper less bed truck.
But once again. Depends on the autopsy and her injuries to know one way or the other.

May 21, 1977 disappeared from Galveston - Medical Examiner said Bower's dental chart matched that of a skeleton found Sunday 03/25/1979 in a field near Avenue P1/2 in Alta Loma. The Galveston girl disappeared May 21, 1977 while walking from her grandmother's home in the 4000 block of Avenue S1/2 to her own residence in the 3100 block of Avenue P. Authorities Tuesday said the cause of death is still unknown. "She had a skull fracture. The cause of death has not been determined.

It was about 10:30 a.m. May 21, 1977 when the seventh grade Lovenberg School student left her grandmother's house, Mrs. Bowers recalls. "She was going home first to get her bathing suit. She wanted to go to the beach. Suzanne walked that same route many times. She never did reach home," said Mrs. Bowers. "The case has been turned over to them because it originated in Galveston. There are no suspects. There appeared to be gunshot holes in her skull."

Linda Faye Sutherlin, 20, 11/07/1971, Brazoria County

Linda Faye Sutherlin, 21, was a Houston area key punch operator and former bartender. On 11/07/1971 her body was found in a Pearland ditch along County Road 89 about one mile south of FM 518 in Brazoria County. She had been raped, shot, kicked and beaten. A pair of panty hose was tied around her neck. Her roommate had reported her missing on 11/05/1971. Police originally suspected a boyfriend who was known to be violent. In the end, her killers turned out to be a known criminal, 24 year-old Harry Andrew Lanham, and an accomplice, 24 year-old ex-convict Anthony Knoppa.

A witness who knew Linda by sight told LE he had seen her the morning of 11/04/1971 standing by her car parked along the road near the bar where she had stopped after work talking to a wrecker driver. Another witness, after reading the newspaper report of Linda's murder told LE he had seen a wrecker parked near the bridge where Linda's body was found. Two years earlier, a young woman had entered a Houston police station to report a rape by a wrecker driver. She gave his name to a detective and said he was a big man. Before the detective finished writing the report, however, she changed her mind and left. That same detective worked Linda's case. He recalled the earlier incident but could not remember the wrecker driver's name until a week or so later when it came to him out of the blue.

Harry Lanham owned a red wrecker. When questioned, he implicated Knoppa, who was tracked down in Conroe. The two eventually confessed to the rape and brutal murder of Linda Fay Sutherlin. Both men were convicted and sentenced to 25 and 50 years respectively. Lanham died in while awaiting appeal in 1973. At the time, he was a suspect in the murders of eight others, including Adele Crabtree to which he and Knoppa had also confessed.

ADELE "GYPSY" CRABTREE,16, 11/03/1971, Montgomery County

Adele "Gypsy" Crabtree was a pretty 16 year-old runaway from Ohio. A free spirited flower child, she worked off and on as a gas jockey, cocktail waitress and go-go dancer in Houston. She was last seen alive on November 2, 1971 near her apartment when she got into a two-tone Mercury and drove away with the male driver. Her body was found on 11/03/1971 near some woods NW of Conroe n Montgomery County. Her body was riddled with two loads of buckshot and one load of birdshot from a 12 gauge shotgun. Knoppa first confessed to the murder. Lanham knew Gypsy, and they had picked her up the night before in the Mercury. Knoppa told LE she'd had consensual sex with both men. After driving around for awhile, Knoppa told her he wanted "more loving". Lanham parked the car, and the three got out. As Crabtree and Knoppa headed for the woods, Knoppa stepped aside, and Lanham shot her. Knoppa said he had seen women killed in Vietnam, but "never like that". Lanham allegedly told him to stick around and he see many more. Thirty hours later, they murdered Linda Sutherlin. The two also confessed to the murder of another woman, Pamela Huebner, but her body was never found.

Lanham and Knoppa were never charged with Crabtree's murder. Instead, James Whittley, another Houston wrecker driver was charged after he failed a polygraph examination. Police at the time did not consider him a suspect in any of the five or six other recent murders of young women.
