A Queens woman was found slain in a marshy area near Howard Beach after she went out for her evening jog Tuesday, law-enforcement sources said.

Karina Vetrano, 30, was reported missing by her father when she didn’t return from her regular run along the Belt Parkway’s bike path at about 5 p.m., according to the sources.

Shortly after her worried dad, a retired firefighter, called 911, police found the body of the St. John’s University graduate in the high-weeded area off 165th Avenue and 78th Street at about 10:30 p.m., the sources said.

Sources said a cause of death has not been determined, but she appeared to have been strangled and her jogging pants were pulled partway down.

Those living nearby told reporters that 'hobos and bums' often congregate in the bushes just off the bike path.

One said there are 'shanty houses' nearby.
NYPD's Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said on Wednesday that Vetrano's father told her not to run down the path.

"Running was one of Vetrano’s passions, Hartstein said. A passion she almost lost as a child.

She had surgery on both sides of her legs when she was young and doctors told her she would never run again.

'But she ran and she ran well,' Hartstein said. 'Every night she’d run the path with her father. She did it every day and it was her thing.'"

bringing these over from the thread

Just watched this. Her parents are so amazingly strong. Having been through something similar in my family my heart goes out to them.

Wow, Mom Vetrano is 100% right. What remarkable passion for a tool to put her daughters killer away. She seems certain of who this "savage" is in my impression, I hope she gets to see justice for her daughter who fought this criminal. MOO

A little recap- The video starts with Mr. V talking about the importance of familial DNA that could both convict and exonerate. Mom then makes a strong case that her daughter fought this savage and that she deserves justice. She challenges anyone to tell her that familial testing should not be used. Several co-sponsoring legislators then support the V. Family and want to see familial testing passed in the senate on 2/10 and then go to the general assembly (if needed and for some reason not passed passed on to the governor for approval possibly in the week after 2/10). Light q&a and mom's final statement is compelling.
I tried and welcome any corrections/additions to what I humbly recall-
Familial testing is passed in 10 states and they want NY to be the 11th.

Thank you to Lauranyc83, observation and mocity for your post about the familial DNA testing and the video of the Vetranos. I agree that KV's parents are absolutely awe-inspiring in their pursuit of justice for their daughter. I truly hope that NY becomes the 12th state to allow the testing.

On another note, was there any discussion on previous threads about the NYC MTA bus routes that go right past the Vetrano home on 84th Street? The Q21 and Q41 go right by the house. Wonder if the perp could have seen KV running while riding the bus. Or could the getaway have been made via the bus.

This was from yesterday:

<snip> Boyce also said detectives have been looking at all summonses and arrests within the areas of the 106th, 73rd, and 75th Precincts. One focus is arrests that occurred in the area of Erskine Street, in the East New York area of Brooklyn bordering the parkland, he said.
