A major security operation is under way near the Louvre museum in Paris after a man with a knife attacked soldiers patrolling the area on Friday.

The interior ministry said on Twitter that the incident was "serious". An anti-terrorism inquiry has been opened, the public prosecutor said in a statement.

around 1,000 people were held inside secure areas of the museum during the incident for their own safety.
Authorities said they would be released in small groups once they had been vetted.

around 10:00 a.m local time (04:00 ET)

.A French soldier shot and wounded a man armed with a machete and carrying two bags on his back on Friday as he tried to enter the Paris Louvre museum in what the government said appeared to have been a terrorist attack.

shouted Allahu Akbar (God is greatest) and rushed at police and soldiers before being shot near the museum's shopping mall, police said, adding a second person had also been detained after acting suspiciously.

attacker was alive but seriously wounded, the head of Paris police Michel Cadot told reporters at the scene, adding the bags he had been carrying contained no explosives.

"The soldier fired five bullets,"
soldier who fired the bullets was from one of the patrolling groups that have become a common sight around the capital since a state of emergency was declared across France in November 2015.

People in the area at the time of the incident described the scene as events unfolded.
"I was in the open courtyard in front of the glass pyramid entrance," Byron Hood, 41, told NBC News. "I just saw the armed guards running and the evacuation tunnels opening."

the man launched his attack when four soldiers guarding the area told him he could not enter the Carrousel du Louvre shopping

“That's when he got the knife out and that's when he tried to stab the soldier,” he added.

He was found to have been carrying two machetes.

Carrousel du Louvre mall, where the incident took place, runs underneath and has an entrance to the museum, which is home to works of art including the "Mona Lisa".

a second person who was behaving suspiciously had been arrested. Officials said the individual did not appear to be connected to the attack, but that prosecutors would determine if they were involved.

huge former royal palace

By 11am, the entire area was shut down,

Rue de Rivoli running alongside the museum was closed to traffic while trains were being pushed through the Palais Royal-Musee du Louvre metro station without stopping.

travel advice for the French ca
pital had been amended due to the incident.

He told a Westminster briefing: 'The travel advice to Paris has been updated, basically exercising caution in the area affected. Our threat level remains where it is.

: 'I hear a shot. Then a second shot. Then maybe two more. I hear people screaming, "Evacuate! Evacuate!
'They told us to evacuate. I told my colleagues at the McDonalds. We went downstairs and then took the emergency exit.'

'There were announcements, then the security guards started running all over the place and after a short period they started gathering everybody up and getting them to one side of the building,'

'We sat there for over an hour waiting and finally they said we are going to evacuate... as we exited the police were searching and checking everybody.'

I think they might move if it it is a terrorist attack, an attempted mass attack, or another mentally disturbed person yelling out the statement cause that's what is done these days.

In Quebec in the beginning everyone was running around saying he yelled that out when the facts became clear he did nothing of the sort, had no ties to terrorism . Zero!

The same click bait happened in Charleston in the beginning - it grabs viewers. --the media’s business model.

Fort Lauderdale same thing then as the truth comes out he was delusional (believing things not true)- he too yelled it out - he is the same person that was telling the FBI his mind was being remotely controlled.

Overwhelmingly, those who have committed terrorist attacks in the United States and Europe aren’t Muslims.

percent of the terrorist attacks there were committed by Muslims over the past five years? less than 2 percent.

vast majority of terror attacks in Europe were perpetrated by separatist groups. 152 terror attacks in Europe. Only two of them were “religiously motivated,” while 84 were predicated upon ethno-nationalist or separatist beliefs.

Even after one of the worst terror attacks ever in Europe in 2011, when Anders Breivik slaughtered 77 people in Norway to further his anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant, and pro-“Christian Europe” agenda as he stated in his manifesto

2014 study by University of North Carolina found, since the 9/11 attacks, Muslim-linked terrorism has claimed the lives of 37 Americans. In that same time period, more than 190,000 Americans were murdered (PDF).

It is a myth according to the numbers

bbm my responses.

I think it's important to keep them separated and not lump them into a package, people kill/murder for different reasons, which imo matter.

Muslim-americans is misleading to me. jmo

https://sites.duke.edu/tcths/files/2013/06/Kurzman_Muslim-American_Terrorism_in_2013.pdf

Since 9/11, Muslim-American terrorism has claimed 37 lives in the United States (Figure 3), out of more than 190,000 murders during this period.

In 2013, the estimated number of murders in the nation was 14,196. This was a 4.4 percent decrease from the 2012 estimate, a 7.8 percent decrease from the 2009 figure, and a 12.1 percent drop from the number in 2004.There were 4.5 murders per 100,000 people. The murder rate fell 5.1

Thank goodness no visitors, employees, or LE were killed. And, thank goodness no artwork was damaged. Can you imagine if something like the Mona Lisa were destroyed? (Yes, I know human lives are more valuable.)

This ended as best as it could, I suppose.

I took a self imposed time out! Moderators I like this kind much more than yours!! That is funny.

BUT have found that I am grateful. That Redit stuff is horrid.

I do not have *advertiser censored* Sapien kids. I do however a canine kid! I feel so concerned for my sisters , anyone who has kids.

This is spiraling so out of control All of it. I loved Les Mis- gone 8 times over the years

What does martial law really translate to in day to day life?

Day to day?

How does this really work?

Are we gonna start killing each other for food? For electricity?

What does that really mean? Day to day??

Those with kids and resources IMO need to start shopping Switzerland real estate

It is mortifying
