Discovery of euthanasia drug prompts dog food recall

"CHICAGO -- An Illinois pet food company is voluntarily recalling one of its products after a powerful sedative found in one of the batches sickened five dogs and killed another.

The company confirmed that pentobarbital, a barbiturate used for anesthesia and euthanasia, was in one of the lots of its Hunk of Beef product. The sedative can cause drowsiness, dizziness, loss of balance and nausea.

The recalled 12-ounce cans were sold in 15 states, including California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Washington and Wisconsin.

The food was manufactured between June 6 and 13."

Thanks for this. How in the world did pentobarbital end up in canned dog food w/out someone deliberately tampering? I hope they find out whoever did this - accidentally or not.

Could it have come from using meat from a euthanized animal?
