I searched and searched and did not find this posted. My apologies if this is already being discussed.

"The Columbia University graduate found dead in a popular tourist spot in Panama was strangled with her own pink bathing suit coverup, according to a new report.

Catherine Johannet, 23, was brutally attacked by an assailant along a wooded trail on Bastimentos Island on Sunday afternoon — just days after she vanished in the beach paradise of Bocas del Toro.

The killer tore off her swimsuit and used it to strangle the Edgemont native, according to Nex Noticias, a local Panamanian TV station.

The perpetrator was still at large.

Authorities detained eight people in connection with the slaying after conducting raids in Bocas del Toro, La Prensa newspaper reported. The FBI joined Panamanian authorities Tuesday to investigate the crime."

U.S. tourist Katherine Johannet, 23, was visiting with a girl friend the island resort of Bocas del Toro in the Republic of Panama on Thursday, Feb 2 when she decided to go on a jungle trail alone. The trail is famous for its small red frogs. Her travel companion got worried when Katherine did not return that evening. The following day the police found her body on the Wezar trail, between Red Frog beach and the non-tourist town of Bastimentos - about a 30 minute walk. Her head had been severely beaten, her body showed signs of being dragged, and she was strangled to death.

The FBI is now assisting the Panamanian police investigate this murder because of its similarities to the murders of two young Dutch women in Bocas del Toro in 2014. The FBI has said that there may be a serial killer in Bocas del Toro responsible for the deaths of the three women.

I have been following this story elsewhere so thank you for starting a thread here! So tragic what happened to Lisanne and Kris but I didn't realize they were murdered, I thought it was determined they had been injured or had some kind of hiking accident? I'll have to go back and reread... Katherine was obviously murdered, how horrible.

OMG!!! This opens up if Lisanne and Kris may have been murdered?!

Kris and Lisanne fell into a ravine in Boquete which is quite a ways south from Bocas del Toro.

The (incorrect) text of this article is:

Although so far speculation, there are similarities in the cases of the American Catherine Johannet and the Dutch Lisanne Froon and Kris Kremers. These three foreigners died in Bocas del Toro, a tourist province in western Panama, and both cases are followed closely by FBI agents in Panama.

Let’s examine this article more closely.

The article headline is : FBI elabora un retrato hablado de posible asesino en serie de Bocas which translates: “ The FBI draws a picture which expressed the possibility of serial murders in Bocas.”

The article goes on to mention that: Además, se conoció que los investigadores del FBI sospechan de la existencia de una o varias personas que se dediquen al asesinato exclusivo de visitantes foráneos.
Translation: “Moreover, it was learned that the FBI investigators suspect the existence of one o r more persons who are dedicated to the exclusive murder of foreign visitors.”

The article also states that “the Panamanian Minister of Security does not think there is a serial killer in Bocas”. And as you mentioned, the Dutch women case was closed as accidental death. However, the cliff /ravine they supposedly fell from was never identified and only partial skeletal remains were found over a wide area, in addition to clothing and a backpack.

However, the article continues, “the FBI interpretation of the data contradicts the Minister of Security and that is easy to discover if the publications are reviewed about both events” (murder of Dutch women and murder of Johannet).

This explains the gist of the article.

Was that proven conclusively?

No. You can read the Kris and Lisanne thread for more details. The best guess is an accident - supported forensically by broken bones in Lisanne's foot - but too many unexplained issues with respect to possible fall location; Kris's shorts, distances Lisanne covered based on the photos; no large bones found; and the found bones not having any injury marks on them or marks from transport by wildlife. Too much doesn't make sense - but it seems it's better for the family to accept what is known than to guess the unknown - it's too sad a story- my heart goes out to the families and the story will always haunt me.

As it was explained to me by the locals - the town of Boquete is in Chiriqui province. The Kremers-Froon remains were found on the riverbanks west of the Pianista trail - which goes over the border of Chiriqui into the Bocas del Toro province - not to be confused with the island chain also referred to as Bocas where Catherine J was found. Therefore, the Kremers-Froon remains were indeed found in Bocas del Toro, then returned to Chiriqui where the case was investigated.
