Dec. 4, 2005 — Researchers at the Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service in Washington state say sometimes a bark is just a bark — but a long, loud panting sound has real meaning.

They say the long, loud pant is the sound of a dog laughing, and it has a direct impact on the behavior of other dogs.

"What we found is that it had a calming or soothing effect on the dogs," said Patricia Simonet, an animal behaviorist in Spokane who has studied everything from hamster culture to elephant self-recognition. "Now, we actually really weren't expecting that."

Nancy Hill, director of Spokane County Animal Protection, admits she was skeptical at first that this noise would affect the other dogs.

"I thought: Laughing dogs?" Hill said. "A sound that we're gonna isolate and play in the shelter? I was a real skeptic … until we played the recording here at the shelter."

When they played the sound of a dog panting over the loudspeaker, the gaggle of dogs at the shelter kept right on barking. But when they played the dog version of laughing, all 15 barking dogs went quiet within about a minute.

"It was a night-and-day difference," Hill said. "It was absolutely phenomenal."

Officials say it works every time, and researchers across the country are taking note.

"The laughing sound that they make is something that was not even considered a vocalization until this study was done," Simonet said.

do you have a link for this article?
I'd like to send it off to someone who works with animals.

I want to hear it. I'd like to know if my doggies ever laugh when they are playing.

I have a question....do they actually pay these people ? I am not disputing their findings and maybe it does work.... next year maybe they should teach the dogs to play poker and the elephants to play football. :blushing:

I swear, my doberman SMILES when she's happy. I mean, REALLY smiles, she pulls her lips tight exposing her teeth and her nose twists to one side. She does this when she's playing, when I arrive home and when I am teasing her by trying to grab her tail...even when I just say....." I am, gonna get your tail" she'll spin around and start smiling( BTW she doesn't have a tail.) and generally anytime she is very happy. It's always followed up with that pant.

Apparently this is a trait shared by dobermans as I have run into many other folks whose dogs do this.

linda-- I JUST LOVE THAT!! i totally know what you mean, one of my dogs is a black lab/dalmatian mix & she does the same thing. when i come home she does the lopsided "smile" and sqints her eyes, twists her nose. and sideways wiggle and sneezes. and we play the "tail" game too. and then there's just the plain old smile when they are relaxed or playing, and i swear i do know when they are laughing.:crazy::crazy:

I have searched and searched for a link with an audio of the dog "laughing" with no luck. Then again, my google knowledge ranks up there with the underground blind mole rat's ability to google.

I miss her. :(

My son has red heeler, and I swear every photo of her shows her looking right into the camera and smiling!! She's so silly.

Here you go Tricia... I had this same subject posted in the Jury room and this link has a video where you can hear the laughter and watch it in action. I hope this helps.
