Cathy Moulton is the only female listed from Maine from that area prior to 1983, but I recall reading a news article in the paper about Maine missing remains, and how two sets were believed to have been from passing cruise ships. I'm thinking this may be one of the sets investigator were referring to.

Good question. Not sure it would apply in this case, but I found this article, which may suggest they determined it this way:

The chin is squarer in the skull of a man than that of a woman, who will tend to have a slightly more pointed chin

Hopefully they did DNA testing, but most likely they are guessing based on size and shape. MOO.
