Manhattan philanthropist, Irene Silverman, was last seen on July 5, 1998, in the vicinity of East 65th Street between 5th and Madison Avenues in Manhattan. Bloodstains were found outside her home.
Silverman was a former dancer and the widow of a Manhattan real-estate and mortgage broker, who had remodeled her six-story Upper East Side mansion into posh apartments after her mother died in 1985.
In May 2000 Sante Kimes and her son Kenneth Kimes were found guilty of murdering Irene Silverman. The Kimeses, who had schemed to bilk Silverman out of her $7.7 million townhouse, were both given multiple life sentences.
Kenneth Kimes was a tenant at Silveman's family mansion at the time.

Silverman had become suspicious with the new tenant and when she dined on the night of July 4 with two of her closest friends, she told her companions she planned to evict Kimes. The next morning, Silverman buzzed the only employee staying in the house that weekend, Aracelis Rivera, to do some laundry and take her boxer Georgie to the roof for some exercise. Rivera picked up the laundry and the dog. But when she checked later in the day, Silverman didn't answer the phone and her door was locked. That afternoon, Rivera talked to another employee, who alerted police.

When The Kimeses were arrested on July 5, 1998 police found Irene Silverman's keys, which she always carried on her person, as well as her old passports, her Social Security card and blank checks from her bank account. A black vinyl suitcase the pair had stashed in a hotel contained several forged documents, including a bogus deed for Silverman's townhouse. Kenneth Kimes told police that he dumped Silverman's body in a construction site somewhere in New Jersey, 35 to 40 minutes from the Holland Tunnel. Her body still has not been found

The man convicted along with his mother of murdering a missing Manhattan millionaire has told police that he dumped her body in a construction site somewhere in New Jersey, a police said.
Kenneth Kimes, 25, is serving a prison sentence of 125 years to life for the murder of 82-year-old Irene Silverman, who disappeared on July 5, 1998.
Kimes told police sources during an interview Tuesday that he threw Silverman’s body into a ditch at a New Jersey construction site 35 to 40 minutes from the Holland Tunnel.
The confession, which comes after 28 months of denying any wrongdoing, has encouraged police to find Silverman’s body, sources said.
“He expressed a willingness to help us find the body,” said a law enforcement source.
Kimes’ lawyer Mel Sachs said he was surprised at the so-called confession because his client has always denied the charges.
“I am totally taken aback because he has always denied any involvement in the disappearance of Irene Silverman,” said Mel Sachs.
Kimes Drove Body to New Jersey
The detective, who spoke on condition he would not be identified, said Kimes admitted that after killing Silverman, he wrapped her body in heavy-duty garbage bags, stuffed it in a duffel bag, put it in the trunk of his car and drove to New Jersey, where he dumped it, the detective said.
“Kimes told us the building where he dumped Silverman’s body was under construction, and he dumped the body inside the hole. He said he doesn’t know the city or the town where he dumped the body but that it was close to the water,” the detective said.
Another New York City Police detective, Joseph Reznick, also said authorities had talked to a witness who said she saw a car similar to Kimes’ in New Jersey on the day Silverman vanished.

Kenneth confessed to killing Silverman in November 2000, a move that surprised his attorneys. He claimed he did not remember the exact location of her burial site. Kenneth said that he wrapped Silverman’s body in black plastic garbage bags and dumped her remains in a ditch at a construction site in New Jersey, 35 to 40 minutes from the Holland Tunnel.

Authorities were conducting searches with Kenneth’s input until his extradiction to California; the search for Silverman has since been postponed. Kenneth continues to maintain that his mother was not involved in Silverman’s murder.

Sante and Kenneth were also considered possible suspects in the 1995 Mississippi disappearance of*Mary Jacqueline Levitz, the heiress to a multi-million dollar estate. Levitz vanished from her home and is presumed murdered, but her body has never been recovered. While there are similarities between her case and Silverman’s disappearance, no link between the two cases has been established.

More information

Missing upper East Side millionaire Irene Silverman frantically told a friend she was being swindled shortly before she disappeared Sunday, police sources said yesterday. As the search for the 82-year-old widow spread to New Jersey, investigators said they believe mother-and-son con artists Sante and Kenneth Kimes were trying to get Silverman to sign away her prized posh mansion on E. 65th St. Two notaries were called to Silverman's building where Kenneth Kimes had rented a $6,000-a-month apartment under an assumed name in the days before her disappearance, police sources said.

One said he refused to notarize a document because it already bore a signature reading "Irene Silverman.
" Don Aoki, who manages a small drugstore, told the Daily News he first met Kenneth Kimes on July 1 in the lounge of the Plaza Athenee Hotel on E. 64th St. after Kimes called him and said the hotel recommended him as a notary. Later that day, they went to Silverman's mansion, where Aoki said Kimes and a woman asked him to notarize papers relating to the sale of the home. Aoki said he was reluctant because the Silverman signature was already on the document, and he is required to witness both signatures. He asked the woman to sign another piece of paper so he could see if the signatures matched. "She didn't want to sign it," Aoki said. "She said, 'Well, I have to think about it.
