Homicide detectives join hunt for missing Brisbane childcare worker Samuel Thompson after his orange Mustang dumped in NSW

HOMICIDE detectives have joined the search for a young Brisbane childcare worker whose distinctive classic car was found abandoned in bushland on the northern NSW coast.
Samuel Thompson was last seen driving away from his apartment in Albion in the city’s northern suburbs in his bright orange 2016 Ford Mustang on March 7.

Police fear he has been murdered.

Thank you for opening, police have also released dash cam footage of the car on Sandgate road http://mypolice.qld.gov.au/blog/2017/03/13/update-2-missing-man-albion/
Oh my, I wonder if he was ambushed on the way or met up with someone voluntarily who was up to no good.
The footage of Sam driving on Sandgate Rd between 10 am -11am on 7 Mar, these next sightings are of his vehicle (from your link). I wonder if it was already out of his hands by then, he was held hostage or?
There are just so many scenarios at this stage.

His vehicle was then sighted in the carpark of the Deep Water Bend Reserve at Bald Hills around 1pm on Tuesday and remained there until the following day.

The Mustang was again sighted in Wooyung, Northern New South Wales, around 7.30pm on Wednesday, March 8 before being located abandoned by police at the same location on Tweed Coast Road Thursday, March 9.

This is a shot from the video linked above. The driver does appear to have a beard, but I'm not sure if it's Sam. What do you think?

I think the footage is of him. You can make out the beard and also a beige top he was wearing when he left the apartment.

Do they normally say 'foul play' and elude to murder unless they know something? For example in KR case it was treated as a missing persons case initially?

I wonder where he went after he left the apartment. It certainly wouldn't take him an hour and a half to drive from Albion to Nundah. That's about 5km.

I was surprised too. There's mention of his vehicle being stolen in Sept. last year, maybe it has something to do with his disappearance.

Mr Thompson was the victim of an unsolved robbery in Brisbane last September, in which his car was stolen. Police are investigating whether his disappearance might be linked to that crime.

Queensland Detective Inspector Tim Tresize said around 40 detectives were now working on the case, with several leads being pursued, including the possibility Mr Thompson — or friends of his — had “unsavoury connections” who may have had something to do with his disappearance.

After Sam's car was returned, he posted on fb that a Louis Vuitton bag, limited edition and a pair of Gucci loafers were still missing. Very pricey stuff.

This is cctv footage of Sam walking to the garage in his apartment building on 7 Mar. His beard is quite full and long compared to the other pics supplied to MSM, which are from 2016 and 2014.
That T-shirt is quite loose about the arms whereas I can't see that in the car. I wondered whether the driver was wearing any top at all. If he is, it seems to be very close-fitting.

I can remember saying to my other half why would anyone steal such a distinctive car

True, even that guy on the motorcycle filmed it, luckily. Very strange what's going down. I watched the footage of the robbers, they were both armed, handgun and a sawed off shotgun, and very well concealed with their clothing. Definitely professionals who mean business.

He said police were continuing to look into whether Mr Thompson's disappearance was linked to an incident in September, where he was assaulted by masked men during a home invasion and had his vehicle stolen.

Mr Thompson, an unemployed childcare worker, had recently moved to his apartment in Agnes St, Albion after the robbery.

On Facebook, he detailed the other items that were stolen, including luxury brand watches, bags, wallets and shoes.

IMO a quick look at finances -----unemployed and just having moved into the apartment in Albion. These apartments are renting for at least $500 per week. The lovely Mustang would have been approx $73,000. The trip to Europe in 2016 and subsequent robbery of luxury brand items....seems like someone was envious of ST lifestyle.

However, if he is a child care worker, how could he afford to own all those things? They do not earn all that much. How old is he? I just looked it up and he is 22yo and unemployed.

Could someone have been hiding in the back of his car and he did not notice them or they held a gun at him and forced him to drive somewhere? IMO it is drug-related.

There's clearly a lot more going on in this young mans life than police have revealed,a low income earning child care worker does not afford to drive a car like that let alone own the rest of the items mentioned. I think its safe to say he might of had a little job on the side unless it's family money?

Would outwardly appear so .... unless as you said family money was involved...or a substantial bank loan when he was working...

Police will no doubt venture into checking where finances have come from...

Going by his FB he is familiar with Deep Water Bend Bald Hills.... pic of him and a jet ski..
