....so powerful it shattered windows and caused other damage to several neighboring homes, authorities said.e explosion rocked the sleepy Washington, D.C.

[h=3]lscattered debris widely, a fire official said, adding the cause wasn't immediately known.[/h]Authorities said they had no reports of any injuries but neighbors said a man lived in the home and investigators didn't know his immediate status or if the house was occupied at the time. Investigators and search and rescue dogs were on the scene at daybreak.

"It's just a pile of debris; it's just a pile of bricks. There's not anything left of the house,"

"I was wondering, 'Are we having an earthquake?' But it was so short."

‘Catastrophic’: Explosion levels home in Rockville, one person unaccounted for
March 17 at 11:12 AM
A house in Rockville exploded early Friday, and firefighters are trying to account for at least one person believed to have lived in the home.
It is not immediately clear what caused the explosion, but Montgomery County Fire Chief Scott Goldstein said that an initial investigation shows that it did not appear to be related to a gas or utility problem. […]

'Just a Pile of Debris': Maryland Home Explosion Blast Felt for Miles; Resident Missing
There was "unauthorized gas use" at the home, the county fire chief said in an update
MARCH 17, 2017
A house in a suburb of Washington, D.C. was leveled early Friday by a thunderous explosion that sprayed debris across nearby homes and could be felt from 4 miles away.
One man is unaccounted for after the blast on the 11000 block of Ashley Drive in Rockville, Maryland. Two cars in the driveway are his, neighbors said.
The home was in foreclosure and was set to be auctioned off later in the day. […]
Authorities are still working to locate and speak with the man's family members. Neighbors said the resident lived alone in the brick house for decades.
His house, listed as his primary residence, was scheduled to be auctioned at 1:30 p.m. Friday, according to RealtyTrac, the company that would have auctioned it. Montgomery County court records show the foreclosure case was closed. […]

The WAPO article stated that the auction would be later next week. If it was scheduled today, that would make more sense. I have a feeling the owner wasn't about to give up his sole source of warmth and shelter. That's very sad if true. JMO

I hope the homeowner didn't commit suicide but that's the way it's looking ... so sad ...

Precisely. :( His home was to be auctioned off and he likely didn't have anywhere to go.

Man, that is sad if it turns out to be this

...........remains of an adult and a pet have been found in the wreckage of a house in Maryland that was leveled by an explosion.

Video of the explosion here

Really strange there was a lot of people out at that time of night. Maybe second explosion but no-one runs away??

This must not be the whole video ?
The first explosion looks to the most powerful, with a giant fire ball appearing out of nowhere and engulfing the home. There is also a late explosion that occurs about 25 seconds into the video, at which point massive plumes of smoke can be seen coming from the home.

Fire Chief Scott Goldstein was able to rule out one possibility, saying early Friday: 'There is no concern about a gas involvement in this explosion.'

That makes no sense -- unless he was what like army and knew how to build bombs or something!

21 seconds before first fire truck heard .

...........not clear whether the remains belonged to the home’s owner, who has not been accounted for since the explosion early Friday. Goldstein says the medical examiner’s office will do an autopsy to identify the remains and determine a cause of death.

Immediately after the blast the home caught on fire, and the structure later had to be leveled by emergency crews trying to put out the blaze

too early to know whether the explosion was intentional or accidental.

Maybe it was an accident - cause of the pet??

Stressed out heart attack or something?

I do not want to think a pet owner would do that .............

There were two explosions.

They say utilities been used illegally - so maybe he did not have it hooked up right?

It almost seems as if the force of the explosion might indicate that it might have been near a connection?

It is not a big home, it would seem it would be one explosion- so maybe the second was like the actual pipe in near where he hooked stuff up?

Steve M.Beck as the owner of the property.

footage from a neighbor shows lasted 30 seconds and featured multiple blasts

The owner purchased the property in 1985 and it is currently worth $380,000, but the opening bid at the auctions was $75,000 for the 1,040-square-foot home

Public records show that a foreclosure notice had been served on the property just this past Tuesday, four days before the auction.

'House blown up, just a flaming crater left behind. Neighbors say was deliberate (ugh).

IMO if that is accurate I think he was trying to blow up neighbors also- pet murderer- if deliberate .

Feelings changed when I heard about pet - sorry

Police: Man found dead in Rockville house shot himself, dog before explosion
UPDATED:MAR 20 2017 06:12PM EDT
ROCKVILLE, Md. - The man whose body was found inside a home that exploded Friday in Rockville has been identified, and his death has been ruled a suicide. The Medical Examiner confirmed Monday that the man who lived in the home, 61-year-old Steven Martin Beck, was found dead in the basement of the home on Saturday, along with his dog.
According to the Medical Examiner's report indicates that Beck died as the result of a gunshot wound, and the dog had also been shot. Investigators are still working to determine what lead to the explosion, which completely destroyed the home Beck had lived in on Ashley Drive in the Randolph Hills neighborhood. […]

Just a strange story. Relieved to learn that doggie was gone before fire.

UGH I do not know, but with this development kinda makes me think he also wanted to take out neighbors.

He WAS in the basement .

If you know you are shooting yourself why would turn on gas?

Did he want to take out neighbors?

Did he want to make sure he successfully completed his suicide?

Did he hope by blowing it up his suicide might not be discovered? Religion?

seemed like some neighbors liked him

http://www.wusa9.com/news/local/rockville/glass-was-ever/423608084

but.............then it seems that might not the case

http://www.fox5dc.com/news/local-news/242748602-story

Very early on there was one neighbor that clearly stated it was deliberate - then in above story neighbors were aware he was depressed.

Or maybe unknown to him there was a small leak and spark from the gun ignited it?

I guess my only question now is was the gas deliberately opened ?

BBM
With the home completely demolished, the basement may be where he ended up after the upper floors collapsed.

I think he wanted the house to burn down so no one else could live in the home he was forced from. He felt he'd been wronged. So, he started the fire, then shot his dog and then himself.

This was/in Md, Rockville articles i read stated that the gas had been shut off 2015, iirc gas company had known that gas was traveling to the home, (illegally) neighbors reported he was a plumber and very helpful neighbor. I do feel it was intentionally set by him, mind set that if couldn't have it no one could. Jmo

Not able to supply links, but speaking of rockville Md i am surprised there hasn't been i thread about the fourteen yr old raped in bathroom at high school. Jmo

Neighbors said the man lived alone, and one said he worked as a plumber.

A plumber would know exactly how to do the most damage with gas.
