NY - Timothy Caughman, 66, stabbed to death, NYC, 20 March 2017 *Arrest*

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., today announced the indictment of JAMES JACKSON, 28, for fatally stabbing 66-year-old Timothy Caughman on March 20, 2017. JACKSON is charged in New York State Supreme Court with Murder in the First and Second Degrees as an Act of Terrorism, Murder in the Second Degree as a Hate Crime, as well as three counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon.

James Jackson prowled the streets of New York for three days in search of a black person to assassinate in order to launch a campaign of terrorism against our Manhattan community and the values we celebrate,” said District Attorney Vance. “Last week, with total presence of mind, he acted on his plan, randomly selecting a beloved New Yorker solely on the basis of his skin color, and stabbing him repeatedly and publicly on a Midtown street corner. James Jackson wanted to kill black men, planned to kill black men, and then did kill a black man.

A white supremacist charged in the racially-motivated stabbing death of a black man backed out of a plea deal and asked the judge for a deferment because he was on pain medication.

James Harris Jackson, 30, an Army veteran, was expected to plead guilty Friday to charges stemming from the March 2017 murder of 66-year-old stranger Timothy Caughman in New York City.

Instead, the defendant, who hobbled into the Manhattan courtroom on crutches, told Justice Laura Ward that he didn't feel he was in the right state of mind to plead guilty because he'd taken painkillers for a broken foot.

Ward asked: 'Although you were prepared to plead guilty to all six counts today and to allocate to each of the counts, due to an injury you sustained in custody, you are currently under pain meds and you do not feel comfortable doing that?'

Jackson replied: 'That is correct.' The response elicited gasps of disbelief from the victim's family.

"...Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance read excerpts from James Jackson’s hate-filled manifesto as he decried the “horror of his actions” when he fatally stabbed 66-year-old Timothy Caughman in March 2017 after stalking a number of black men in New York City.

“James Jackson is a white supremacist and a terrorist,” Vance said of the Baltimore man and veteran who served in Afghanistan.

Given a chance to speak, Jackson, who is white, said he wanted to apologize for “this horrible and unnecessary tragedy.”

“It never should have happened,” he added. “And if I could to it all over again, this never would have happened, for sure.”
