CA - Samuel Brooks, 39, Oceanside, 26 Sept 1992
OCEANSIDE ---- In 1992, the body of Oceanside transient Sammy Brooks was found stuffed in a sleeping bag in the Anza-Borrego Desert.
An autopsy showed he had been tortured and murdered and detectives think it was racially motivated.
Thirteen years later, his killer has never been brought to justice and sheriff's investigators would like to solve the case, Detective Rick Scully said.
"There was a significant racial motivation in this crime," Scully said.
Detectives later discovered that Brooks, who was homeless and a methamphetamine user, had been murdered in a garage in Oceanside, he said. Scully said Brooks had been killed sometime in the weeks before he was found on Sept. 26, 1992, by a tourist who stopped to take a photograph from the side of the road in the desert.
"(His murder) was witnessed by some people who were afraid to come forward," Scully said.
