NJ - Chase Merone, 17, Hunterdon County, 28 March 2017

RARITAN TWP. -- Chase Merone, a 17-year-old township youth, left home Tuesday night and has not been seen since early Wednesday morning, according to his father, Jonathan Merone.

Merone urged his son, a student at Hunterdon Central Regional High School, to come home or contact him as soon as possible and said he won't face any punishment.

We just want to know that he's safe," his father told NJ Advance Media on Thursday afternoon. "He's not in trouble."

Chase Merone was last seen at the Wawa store on Route 31 at 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday, where he was seen on the surveillance camera, his father said. He has been missing since then, according to his father.

Chase had left a note saying he would leave his cell phone at the Wawa, and he did leave it there, so he has not been able reach his son since he left, Merone said.

Chase left on his long skateboard, his father said.

On Tuesday night, just before Chase left, "We had a little bit of an argument," his father said. "He hadn't been doing his homework."

Raritan Township police are looking for Chase, along with police in Mount Olive, where the family used to live, his father said.

He may be in the Jacksonville, Fla., area, "unfortunately" no reported sightings of Chase have been confirmed.

The high school did not notify students and parents that Chase was missing until he had been gone for two weeks.

Letters apparently signed by missing N.J. youth say he is safe

UPDATE: This story has been updated to include an email sent to NJ Advance Media by Chase Merone's mother.

"I just want to send a message to everyone that I am safe and that I did not run away. I just needed to go somewhere warm to take a break from everything," the letter concludes.

The letter, with no return address, was sent by mail to NJ Advance Media and signed by "C. Merone."

Chase's father, Jonathan Merone, was provided a copy of the handwritten letter and said his son might have written it, but he isn't sure.

Chase will reach adulthood when he turns 18 on May 18, but he would*still be listed as a missing person, police said.

The family was disappointed last week when Chase failed to show up for the funeral of his grandfather.

His father said the family wanted Chase to be aware that his grandfather, Ronald J. Merone of Greentown, Pa. died on May 7 at the age of 70.

Chase will turn 18 and become a legal adult on Thursday. Police have said he will still be listed as a "missing person," although he will no longer be classified as a juvenile.

Chase Merone, who turned 18 years old today, is no longer missing.
Merone responded to the Pennsylvania State Police-Honesdale Station and met with troopers there, police said, and the Missing Juvenile entry was removed from the system.
