BOSTON (Reuters) - Four men were found fatally shot in a rap music studio in the basement of a Boston home, police said on Wednesday in the city's deadliest shooting in more than a decade.
The killings late on Tuesday in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood pushed the city's murder rate to a 10-year-high of 71 and marked Boston's worst shooting since a massacre in a Chinatown social club that killed five people in 1991.

Police Superintendent Bobbie Johnson said the latest shootings in the basement music studio of a home did not appear to have been random and the area was not considered a trouble spot. Police said they did not have a motive for the shooting.

As two more victims of last week’s recording studio massacre were laid to rest yesterday, Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley and more than a dozen clergymen asked Bostonians to take a seat — inside the nearest courthouse.

Their “peace partnership” is aimed at offsetting the “Stop Snitchin’ ” movement of gang members and their thuggish associates who, bent on intimidating victims and witnesses into silence, have sought to pack courtrooms and stare down trial participants.

“We are calling on members of our congregations, crime-watch groups and private citizens to literally come into court, bear witness and show support for victims and witnesses,” Conley said.

“When good people pack the courtroom — people of good faith and resolve — it helps,” he said.

The Rev. Michael Person can attest to that. When earlier this year the man convicted of murdering his son, musician Michael Greene, 26, on Sept. 20, 2001, was on trial, Person said, the cheering squad who backed him made it feel like “God came into the courtroom.”

Calvin Carnes and Robert Turner were convicted in 2008 in the fatal shootings of Jason Bachiller, 20; Jihad Chankhour, 22; Edwin Duncan, 21; and Christopher Vieira, 19. Carnes was friends with three of the young men — he did not know Chankhour — who had formed a rap group called Graveside. The four men were shot a total of 15 times in Duncan’s home while his mother, Darnella Phillips, was in the house.

Carnes received four consecutive life sentences, while Turner, who pleaded guilty to acting as an accessory after the fact, was sentenced to 13 years in prison.

Judge Denies Mass Murderer’s Bid for New Trial, Calls Claims “Without Merit”
BOSTON, Oct. 11, 2013—A Suffolk Superior Court judge has joined the state’s highest court in denying a new trial for the man who killed Jason Bachiller, Jihad Chankhour, Edwin Duncan, and Christopher Vieira in the basement of a Bourneside Street home seven years ago, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.

In an expansive, 71-page decision, Judge Patrick Brady used the phrase “without merit” more than two dozen times to describe a motion by CALVIN CARNES, Jr. (D.O.B. 8/8/86) seeking a new trial in one of the bloodiest crimes in Boston’s history. In a separate decision, Brady also denied any further evidentiary hearings in the case, effectively putting an end to the defendant’s appeals from four convictions for first-degree murder, three counts of armed robbery, two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm, and single counts of larceny over $250 and unlawful possession of a large-capacity firearm.

Turner pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact to the murders and to possessing the handgun, shotgun, and AK-47 stolen from the scene – Edwin Duncan’s basement recording studio. Prosecutors recommended a sentence of 14 to 16 years; he received 11½ to 13 and died in prison in 2011.

May 2011:
Robert Turner of Dorchester, 24, was found hanged by a bed sheet in his cell at the maximum security Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley at about 12:08 p.m. by a correctional officer delivering lunch, said a Department of Correction spokeswoman, Diane Wiffin. Turner was taken to Leominster Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 1:12 p.m., she said.
