Excerpt from the Lewiston Tribune, 2003:
It was May 1978 when Franklin David Harder, 25, was reported missing in the Burgdorf area west of Riggins.
Harder was taking care of some property at Burgdorf for a Riggins couple. It had been 10 days since anyone had heard from the man described as a bit of a loner. A search crew was assembled, but didn’t know where to start.
“We all agreed that it would be futile to go to Burgdorf and start a search at random, not knowing just where to start or what direction to go,” the sheriff’s report says.
A month later the search resumed by two men who believed by holding a piece of Harder’s clothing, they could walk to where he was.
Snow and the risk of avalanche caused the search team to abandon the effort. Several more attempts were made through the summer of 1978 before the search was abandoned.
“I have found nothing to prove or disprove that Frank Harder is or is not anywhere in the area,” the report reads. “… Everyone I’ve talked to that knew Frank, even slightly, thought that there was something wrong with Frank. The words “weird,” “pot smoker” and “crazy hippy” were used quite frequently to describe Frank.”
The cases are interesting to read, says Idaho County Sheriff Larry Dasenbrock, and leave a lot of questions. He hasn’t given up on them, although they aren’t actively being investigated.
He has scanned all the documents into his computer since taking over as sheriff, and a map in his basement office at the Idaho County Courthouse has a Post-it note showing where Adams was camped.
There is still a chance something will turn up, he says.
If you have information about this case, contact the Idaho County Sheriff’s Office.*

Case History
On August 26, 1979, hikers found the torso of a white male in Buffalo Cave in Clark County. Years later, on March 30, 1991, different hikers found found an arm and both legs in the same cave. The victim's head was never found.

It seems his father died in 1996 and his mother in 2013 (age 93). He also had an older brother who died in 2002 and seems to have a living sibling. They are all from Idaho. This information is from Ancestry. Given the close and local family I am surprised there was not more coverage in the nearly 40 years since the disappearance.

oh Great info alb1on thank you.. Yes its sad this has not had more coverage.. I just came across him the other day for the first time. so he still has 1 more living sibling.. I wonder if they are still looking?

Details of Disappearance
Harder was last seen in Idaho County, Idaho on April 23, 1978, his 33rd birthday. He had been taking care of a property in the Burgdorf area owned by a local couple. He was known as a loner and an eccentric, so he wasn't reported missing for ten days.

Although a search team was assembled, the weather was bad and searchers didn't know where to begin looking. Search efforts continued sporadically through the summer of 1978, but they never returned up anything. Little information is available in Harder's case; it remains unsolved.
