Officers Won’t Be Charged in Black Man’s Death in Louisiana

    May 2, 2017

The Justice Department will not file charges in the fatal shooting of a black man by white police officers last year in Baton Rouge, La., according to two people familiar with the decision.

Alton B. Sterling, 37, was shot dead last July by the local police after being pinned to the ground by officers who were arresting him. His death prompted a widespread outcry, and the Justice Department’s civil rights division opened an inquiry in coordination with the F.B.I. and the United States attorney’s office in Baton Rouge.

The decision was the first high-profile case in which the department under Attorney General Jeff Sessions decided not to bring charges against law enforcement.

Alton Sterling's family didn't get notice about federal decision, lawyers say

Sterling's closest relative said they learned about the Justice Department's reported decision through the national media, not the federal agency itself.

"We were assured that we would get a heads up, that they would meet with stakeholders," said Brandon DeCuir, an attorney representing Sterling's three youngest children, in an interview Thursday. "We are quite upset. The family was not notified."

It doesn't seem like too much to ask that they notify the family first.

7 arrested in clash with Baton Rouge police during Alton Sterling protest

Seven people were arrested during a clash between Baton Rouge police and marchers commemorating the one-year anniversary of Alton Sterling's death outside Baton Rouge police headquarters Wednesday (July 5), authorities said.

Baton Rouge Police Department spokesman L'Jean Mckneely Jr. said a crowd of roughly 30 people, some of them members of the New Black Panther Party, were demonstrating and being filmed by a camera crew. The New Black Panther Party, a black separatist organization that has come under fire for making anti-Semitic statements, could not be reached for comment.

Alton Sterling family sues Baton Rouge, police officers involved in shooting

Alton Sterling's five children are suing East Baton Rouge Parish, the Baton Rouge Police Department, Police Chief Carl Dabadie and the two police officers involved in Sterling's death: Blane Salamoni and Howie Lake II. They filed the suit Tuesday morning (June 27) in the 19th Judicial District Court in Baton Rouge, seeking unquantified damages for the killing.
