2017.05.20 - Trump Arrives in Saudi Arabia to a Warm Welcome

Trump Arrives in Saudi Arabia to a Warm Welcome

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — With trumpets blaring, cannons booming and fighter jets streaking overhead trailed by red, white and blue contrails, President Trump arrived in the scorching heat of the Arabian desert on Saturday hoping to realign the politics and diplomacy of the Middle East by forcefully reasserting American support for Sunni Muslim countries and Israel against Iran’s Shiite-led government.

The start of Mr. Trump’s first trip abroad since becoming president — coming amid the scandals and chaos engulfing his administration — was intended to be a blunt rejection of President Barack Obama’s vision for the region. Mr. Obama sought a reconciliation with Iran and negotiated a deal intended to keep Tehran from developing nuclear weapons. As Mr. Trump arrived in Saudi Arabia, Iranians re-elected President Hassan Rouhani, who sealed the nuclear deal.

Mr. Trump, whose face was plastered on billboards around the city, was greeted warmly by Saudi leaders, who had grown weary and disenchanted with Mr. Obama. They fault him for failing to intervene forcefully in the Syrian war and for what they view as tolerance of Iranian support for terrorism.

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (CNN)President Donald Trump was lavished with extravagant royal pomp here Saturday during his first stop abroad as President, an elaborate start to a trip meant to bolster international partnerships but which aides now hope can reset a scandal-pocked narrative back home.

Trump's stop in an enthusiastic Saudi capital is the first in a nine-day, five-country swing across the Middle East and Europe. The complex itinerary will take Trump to the capitals of three great world religions and introduce him to the grueling pace of presidential foreign travel.

Trump, Saudis agree to new task force to take on extremists

The U.S. and Saudi Arabia entered into a strategic agreement on Saturday that establishes a new joint commission to combat terrorist financing while deepening military ties between the two nations.

President Trump and Saudi King Salman signed the Saudi-U.S. Joint Strategic Vision Declaration as part of a state visit by the president to the Middle Eastern kingdom.

Under the agreement, the two countries plan to form a Strategic Joint Consultative Group "to chart the course of this strategic partnership."

The new strategic alliance between the U.S. and the oil-rich kingdom will be based on three tracks:

Countering "violent extremist messaging" from the region.
    Disrupting the financing of terrorism.
    And advancing defense cooperation.

First and foremost, before anything else productive can occur, we need PEACE in the middle east.

    PEACE first.

A common goal of unity to take on terrorism, eliminate it, and bring stability. We, the U.S. cannot do this alone. The middle east has to lead the way.

Then, and only then, with the sands be fertile for human rights reforms, women's rights, working on reforming and modernizing islam.

There is a website for the summit:
    THREE SUMMITS. SHARED VISION.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia welcomes President Donald Trump and leaders from across the Islamic world for this historic meeting on May 20-21, 2017. United under a single vision – Together We Prevail – this highly anticipated event, the first of its kind in history, will renew our mutual commitment to global security and further strengthened already deep business, cultural and political ties.

Over the course of three major summits—the Saudi Arabia and United States summit; the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and United States summit; and the Arab Islamic American summit—historic relationships will be strenghthened through a shared belief in tolerance and collaboration. The foundation will be laid for a new beginning and the promise of a brighter future for all.

    TOGETHER WE PREVAIL

United under a single vision – Together We Prevail – this highly anticipated event, the first of its kind in history, will renew our mutual commitment to global security and further strengthen already deep business, cultural and political ties.

    TOLERANCE AND PARTNERSHIP UNITE US.
A SHARED VISION FOR THE FUTURE IS HOW WE WILL SUCCEED

U.S. technology and engineering conglomerate GE said on Saturday it had signed $15 billion of business deals with Saudi Arabia as part of the kingdom's drive to diversify its economy beyond oil.

In April 2016, Barack Obama landed in Saudi Arabia for his final visit to the kingdom as president of the United States. Unlike on his previous visits and those of other heads of state, Obama’s arrival was not broadcast live on Saudi state television with its usual fanfare. Rather than the Saudi king greeting Obama at the airport, it was the governor of Riyadh. The Saudis were seemingly going out of their way to snub Obama as he entered his final months in office. They were angry at the administration’s policies in the Middle East, including a perceived shift toward Iran and Obama’s refusal to intervene in the Syrian war.

A year later, the House of Saud is preparing this weekend to host President Donald Trump as he makes Riyadh the first stop on his maiden overseas trip. For Trump, the Saudis have moved to the other extreme.

Beyond the pageantry and bombast designed to impress Trump and other Saudi allies, the kingdom is using his visit to project a new confidence after years of tension with the Obama administration. After the administration expended considerable political capital to reach a nuclear deal with Iran in July 2015, Saudi rulers bemoaned that Obama had shifted U.S. foreign policy to be more acquiescent toward Tehran. Obama also reduced direct American involvement in the Middle East, resisting calls to intervene military in the Syrian war and to send a large number of troops to Iraq to fight the Islamic State. Saudi leaders were particularly upset after Obama suggested in an interview with The Atlantic, published before his final visit to Riyadh in April 2016, that they should figure out ways to “share the neighborhood” with Iran.

Above all else, the current Saudi leadership views Iran as an existential threat and doesn’t want to hear admonishments from the United States about sharing the neighborhood. In Trump, the Saudis see a natural ally who—despite his occasional outburst that the United States is losing “a tremendous amount of money” in defending Saudi Arabia—views Iran as the greatest threat to regional security and “responsible for intensifying multiple conflicts and undermining U.S. interests” across the Middle East, as Secretary of State Rex Tillerson put it in a statement in April. The House of Saud appears convinced that it’s back in America’s good graces—and that the natural order has been restored in Washington and the Middle East.

Nixon used a lot of overseas travel to divert attention during Watergate, including a trip to Saudi Arabia. David Gergen was just on CNN relating how he traveled with Nixon during the last months to Cairo, Egypt, where they were met with millions of cheering people.

American country star Toby Keith performed at a men’s-only concert in Riyadh on Saturday night, coinciding with Trump’s visit. As Trump and Salman were driven in a golf cart around the palace after dinner, the president trained his eyes on a jumbo screen playing the live concert.

And then he curtsied. Or maybe it was an attempt to genuflect. Is this proper?
