2017.05.24 - President Trump meets Pope Francis

You probably won’t see the most important part of Trump’s meeting with Pope Francis

On the policy front, the two have little in common. Francis published an entire papal encyclical defending the “very consistent scientific consensus” surrounding the issue of global climate change, but Trump has claimed it’s a hoax invented by the Chinese. Francis instructed all Catholic churches in Europe to take in Syrian refugees, but Trump is trying to ban them from entering the United States. Francis preaches a deeply progressive and poverty-focused understanding of economics, but business-mogul Trump is an ardent defender of aggressive capitalism and deregulation.
“The Vatican has been meeting with world leaders for about 1,000 years,” Reese, who is also a Jesuit priest, said. “People they agree with, people they disagree with…the Vatican is used to this kind of thing.”

And Francis’ background as a Jesuit may make him even more likely to be gracious towards Trump, especially in public.

“One of the prime Jesuit virtues, which every Jesuit learns in the novitiate, is to give people the benefit of the doubt — presidents included,” said James Martin, a Jesuit priest and editor-at-large of the Catholic magazine America, who is also a consultor to the Vatican’s Secretariat for Communication.
“Trump does have a thin skin, but, frankly, he’s shown himself able to totally reverse his position on some things,” Reese said. “The Vatican is looking for a partner they can work with.”

What will the Pope tell President Trump?

Still, the Pope continued to condemn Trump-like political rhetoric, even if he never named Trump himself. The day before the presidential election, he warned Christians not to be tempted by "the false security of physical or social walls."

"Dear brothers and sisters," he said, "all walls fall. All of them. Do not be fooled."

After the election, several of Francis' closest American allies picked up the Pope's banner, sounding ready to lead an anti-Trump resistance.
"What keeps despots, dictators awake at night, what topples evil empires is the little person who goes into the square in the middle of the town in the dark of the night and scrawls on the wall, 'No,'" Cardinal Joseph Tobin of Newark, New Jersey, said earlier this month at a rally to support a Mexican immigrant threatened with deportation.

"And I want to say to you, we are the 'No' that God scrawls on the wall."

Pope Francis and Donald Trump to meet. Here’s what you need to know.

From America Magazine - The Jesuit Review

President Trump departed Friday for his first overseas trip, which the White House says in intended to highlight the need for unity among Muslims, Jews and Christians. It includes stops in Saudi Arabia, Israel and the Vatican, where Mr. Trump will meet with Pope Francis and other church leaders on May 24. Here is what you need to know about the first meeting between the president and the pope.
Then again, Mr. Trump is a master manipulator of media, and Pope Francis remains a global superstar. So if the president sees in his meeting with Pope Francis a possibility of diverting attention away from his challenges at home, or unforeseen setbacks at the start of his trip, expect a tweet or two from Mr. Trump that could extend the media shelf life of his first papal meeting.
    Much more at link.

I'd love to see the Pope scolding this fraud in the same manner John Paul II did on the tarmac in Nicaragua to priest Ernesto Cardenal in 1983. #sandinista

And for so much better reason.

'I won't forget what you said,' Trump tells pope after meeting at Vatican

According to a summary provided by the Holy See, the pope and president talked, among other things, about “the promotion of peace through negotiation and inter-religious dialogue, with special reference to the Middle East and the protection of Christian communities.”
In their private conversation and in a subsequent one with two of the pope’s top advisors—Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the secretary of state, and Archbishop Paul Gallagher, secretary for relations with states, a Vatican statement said the two leaders discussed their “joint commitment in favor of life, and freedom of worship and conscience” and expressed the hope for “serene collaboration between the State and the Catholic Church in the United States, engaged in service to the people in the fields of healthcare, education and assistance to immigrants.”

Surprisingly, the summary included no mention about “care for our common home” or climate change, but that does not mean the issue was not addressed in the two conversations that lasted a total of 80 minutes.

Pope looks glum after Vatican meeting with Donald Trump

Pope Francis once said that Christians must have “cheerful faces and eyes full of joy”. But there was little evidence of those emotions as Donald Trump descended on the Vatican on Wednesday for his first face-to-face encounter with the Argentinean pontiff.
