2017.05.26 - Evergreen State College--demands resignation of professor...

College Professor Objects To Exclusion of Whites From Campus For “Day of Absence” . . . Students Denounce Him As Racist and Call For His Termination

    May 26, 2017

There is another controversy on an American campus after a professor objected to a plan that involved excluding whites from campus. Evergreen State College biology professor Bret Weinstein made a reasoned objection to the plan for this year’s “Day of Absence” on campus. In prior years, people of color would leave the campus to highlight their contribution to the school. This year, it was proposed that whites should leave campus and Weinstein objected to the obvious unfairness of such a race-based exclusion. The result, as shown in the videotape below, was a mob scene around Weinstein as students called him a racist and called for his resignation. Protests have denounced his “anti-blackness” and demanded his removal from teaching.

Weinstein made a rather obvious objection an email to a plan to exclude people from campus based on the race:

“There is a huge difference between a group or coalition deciding to voluntarily absent themselves from a shared space in order to highlight their vital and under appreciated roles … and a group or coalition encouraging another group to go away . . . I would encourage others to put phenotype aside and reject this new formulation … On a college campus, one’s right to speak—or to be—must never be based on skin color.”

So much Washington popping up today! I've been to the Evergreen State College campus several times.

A couple weeks back, Naomi Wolf spoke there. It is a very, very liberal college.

This is what we are creating now---a group of college students who do not even allow anyone who disagrees with them to speak.

And this biology professor is a far left progressive. And he does not agree to stay home when they ask the whites to stay home, and now they expect that he should be fired for not agreeing to their demands.

BBM/RSBM - Was he there when "people of color" left the campus willingly to show their contribution to the school in past years? I wonder if he stood up for them as well?

It seems this was something approved by the school and was done in the past with no issue, just different ethnicities left voluntarily.

Professor told he's not safe on campus after college protests

Demonstrations involving as many as 200 students filled classrooms and the President’s office on campus on Tuesday and Wednesday. Protesters are upset over what they believe are racist policies at the college, and some called for Weinstein to resign.

Earlier this school year Weinstein raised concerns about proposed policy changes, including one that would have race play a larger role in the hiring process.

Weinstein, who is white, said opposing that idea does not make him a racist.

“When one opposes these proposals, what happens is one is stigmatized as ‘anti-equity’ and because I am light-skinned the narrative suggests I'm a person who has benefited from privilege and that I'm trying to preserve that privilege in the face of a legitimate challenge,” said Weinstein

    From the DM ^ article:

Students are calling for a professor to resign after he criticized an event where white people were invited to leave campus for a day.
Bret Weinstein, a biology professor at Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, criticized the way the college's Day of Absence event would be structured this year in an email to other faculty.
In the past, Day of Absence has meant students and faculty of color leave campus to show how much they contribute to the college while white people attend anti-racism workshops, according to Heat Street.

But this year, the event organizers are asking white students and faculty to leave campus, which Weinstein, a professor at Evergreen State for 15 years, responded to in an email, saying he would not participate in Day of Absence and would remain on campus.
I would think someone who'd been teaching at Evergreen for 15 years would have been fine with something like this. What's his problem?

I am not saying I agree with or approve of how the students treated him.

Evergreen State College--demands resignation of professor...

Still had cocktails so still fuzzy but I can't seem to go to bed until I figure this one out. Apologies because I really don't understand. So the whites were supposed to leave the college why? I understood the day without immigrants but I'm not fully grasping the purpose of the day without whites and why he's bad for not participating. Can someone please break it down for me in an elementary level because for real I'm kinda topsy and am not getting it.

Hmm. I get the point behind the day of absence but it just feels like... Didn't we fight a long time so everyone could attend together? So, like, celebrate attending together. IDK I don't like the pressure that clearly exists to participate... Like... Very conformist. F full disclosure I mentioned last week I need to drink more and took myself up on it just a wee bit. I'm fine with honoring people and events this just seems kinda weird to me. Shrug.

Very VERY liberal. I've been to the campus too. In high school we were all fascinated by the idea of a college without grades.

Did you hear what he said or read his email.

YES, he was fully in support of any group VOLUNTARILY leaving the campus in prior years/

    But he said:

“There is a huge difference between a group or coalition deciding to voluntarily absent themselves from a shared space in order to highlight their vital and under appreciated roles … and a group or coalition encouraging another group to go away . . . I would encourage others to put phenotype aside and reject this new formulation … On a college campus, one’s right to speak—or to be—must never be based on skin color.”

And so he decided to come AND TEACH HIS CLASS. There is no reason he should resign or be fired for deciding to come and teach his biology class for that day.

He was an avid Bernie Sanders supporter. He is a progressive and they should not be trying to ruin his life in this way because he did not agree with their one protest day.

Day of Absence has been a thing at Evergreen since the 70's. People of color have always left the campus for this day until it was proposed this year to change it. This professor has had no issue with this for 15 years until the role was reversed on who leaves campus?
