    Virginia State Police special agent dead after shooting in Richmond; suspect in custody
    A Virginia State Police special agent who was shot Friday night in Richmond died from his injuries early Saturday morning, according to a tweet from the Virginia State Police.

    Walter was riding in a marked Richmond Police Department SUV as part of an ongoing partnership when he was shot.

    Walter and the Richmond officer pulled up behind a silver Chevrolet Cobalt that was parked in the wrong direction on the street around 7:35 p.m. Friday.

    They approached the car. While the Richmond Police officer was talking to the driver, Walter walked over to the passenger side where police say 27-year-old Travis A. Ball was sitting.

    Ball shot once, police said, and took off running. (...)

    Ball, of Richmond, is in custody after a manhunt that went on through the night.

    Slain VSP special agent was a husband, father, coach and ex-marine

    He was born in Philadelphia and from 1989 until 1994 he served his country as a U.S. Marine.

    Prior to joining the Virginia State Police, he worked as a security officer at MCV Hospital and then served two years as an officer with the Virginia Division of Capitol Police.

    Police said Walter was known throughout Powhatan County, for more than just his police work, but also his commitment to bettering the lives of local youth.

    Along with his wife, he founded and ran a nonprofit organization called the Powhatan Youth Wrestling and Community Development Corporation. Through this and the Blackhawk Gym, he worked to mentor disadvantaged youth while fostering their talents through physical fitness and sportsmanship.

    Man accused of killing Virginia State Police special agent appears in court
    Travis Ball, the man accused of shooting and killing Virginia State Police Special Agent Michael Walter, was in court Thursday.

    His second appearance in two weeks was uneventful.

    Prosecutors and Ball’s defense team, which includes veteran attorney Cary Bowen and Deputy Capital Defender Jennifer Stanton from Norfolk, set another date in two weeks when they will set a trial date.
