LITTLETON – Authorities have called off an almost three-week search for a missing Waterloo woman after finding a body in the Wapsipinicon River Thursday night.

Black Hawk County Sheriff Tony Thompson said identification of the female body is pending the results of an autopsy, which is likely several days out, but the location of the remains, tattoos and other circumstances are consistent with the disappearance of 47-year-old Rhonda Apfel.

Officials have confirmed a body recovered from a river is that of a missing Iowa woman.

Rhonda Apfel, 47, was last seen on May 28, and a fisherman discovered a body in the Wapsipinicon River west of Littleton on June 15.

Dr. Jonathan Thompson with the Iowa State Medical Examinerís Office said officials have confirmed the body recovered from the river was Apfel. He said the cause of death hasnít been determined and is pending further tests.

Thompson said he wasnít able to determine when she died.
