A divorce from her husband, Alfred P Thomas, was completed in August 1976. According to the record (on Ancestry) she had 3 children. A separate marriage record on Ancestry suggests the divorce may have been to enable Alfred to remarry. Interestingly, 2 months before she disappeared, the family filed suit against Gulf Resources and Chemical Corp, and Bunker Hill Co for damages arising from lead pollution from the smelter operated by the companies and malicious conduct. They were seeking $1 million in damages. The story gives the names of the 3 children as Stormy Jean, Kristina and Alfred Jr. I have not been able to find any record of what became of the suit. Of the children, Stormy Jean married in Indiana in 1990 and became Stormy Jean Maike. Not sure what happened to the other 2 but it seems probable that the children are still alive.

Something that may help determine whether you have the right Marla Thomas is that her maiden name is Crabtree and her DOB is 22 April 1952.
 
Possibly Pierce County Jane Doe (1976)? Coincidentally, she was found two years to the day after Marla disappeared. She was estimated to be approximately 5'6" tall but the remains were skeletal so the height could be off. No mention is made of whether the UID is believed to have had children or not. I am confident the records in #3 above are referring to the correct Marla Thomas. There are also marriage records on Ancestry confirming the maiden name and the newspaper article confirms the location. It is an odd case. I can find no indications to suggest any suspects, other than the lawsuit (and it seems a stretch to think that even as venal an organisation as Bunker Hill - as shown in the book linked - would resort to murder). What does puzzle me is that the family seem so silent.

I am a bit surprised at the link. Marla is said to be 5ft 2in on Charley Project whilst Orange Socks Jane Doe is given as between 5ft 8in and 5ft 10in (which should be accurate given the very brief interval between death and being found). I know reported heights can be unreliable but that level of discrepancy seems unlikely.
 
Some people suggested that Marla may have been a victim of Ted Bundy. She disappeared 7 days after 17 year old Laurie partridge.
 
Ok, Now I’m really wondering who could’ve possible been the perpetrator in Marla’s case.
