Breaking News incident at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris police telling people to stay away.

Reports a man tried to attack a policeman with a hammer.

Police officer and attacker both injured.

Paris Police have warned the public to avoid the area.

They tweeted: "Square in front of #NotreDame Intervention being the number of police, avoid the area."

A French journalist claimed police shot a man armed with a hammer, but this is unconfirmed."

Paris police: Assailant attacked a police officer near Notre Dame Cathedral, and the officer shot, wounded attacker.
 
Authorities, who are investigating the incident as a potential terror attack, asked members of the public to stay away from the area during ongoing operations.

The man attacked an officer with a hammer before one of his colleagues opened fire and "neutralised" him, French media reported.

A police union official, Cedric Michel, said a man armed with a hammer went after the police officer, who was patrolling the esplanade in front of the world-famous cathedral known for its gothic architecture and gargoyles. Michel said the attacker was &#8220;neutralized&#8221; by police.


A police spokesperson told The Associated Press that the officer used his weapon to shoot the assailant. The spokesperson was not authorized to be publicly named.

French officials are reporting that the man shouted "this is for Syria" as he attacked the policeman with a hammer. - Sky News U.K.

The attacker was an Algerian student who also had kitchen knives in his possession.
