Shakespeare in the Park Show--- Stabbing of Trump featured

Shakespeare in the Park Show Features Stabbing of Trump Look-Alike

    http://www.nbcnewyork.com/entertainm...427258723.html

He looks like Donald Trump, with his fluffy hair, dark suit and tie hanging below the belt. He moves like Trump. He even has a wife with a Slavic accent.

And at the start of the third act, the actor playing Julius Caesar in Central Park's free summer Shakespeare in the Park festival is knifed to death on stage, blood staining his white shirt.

The decision to inject a Trump look-alike into the leading role in "Julius Caesar" is a provocative one, given both the famous assassination scene and a nude scene in the show.

[ I could only imagine if a conservative arts group had done the same bloody scene with Barack and Michelle---being stabbed to death with the Secret Service looking on and smiling..]

    Oh you know it.

If a conservative comedian had held Obama's head, they'd be in jail. Obama's supporters would be crying hate and racism.

Liberals are constantly quoting Mrs. O's, "When they go low, we go high." Sure, high all right. The highest level vile illegal behavior that has never been leveled at any president in U S history. Is behaving this way a wonderful role model for their children?

And what about the assassination tweets? I forget how many called for POTUS' murder. It runs in the thousands I believe. Classy.

Calvin Broadus, Jr., alias Snoop Dogg, recently released a music video for a rap song called “Lavender” in which he aims a handgun right at the skull of a clown dressed as President Donald J. Trump. Mr. Dogg — who pled no contest to felony gun possession in April 2007 — pulls the revolver’s trigger. Out pops a red and white flag that reads: “Bang.”

Oh yes, I remember when Snoop Dogg released that. Also when Madonna talked about blowing up the White House and Bow Wow tweeted a threat to pimp out Melania. Can you imagine the nuclear fallout if one of the members of One Direction had tweeted a threat to pimp out Mrs. O? What happened to "Love Trumps Hate?" Liberals chant this mantra ad nauseum then turn around and make hateful and snarky comments and tweets or actual threats.

When I was walking through Charlotte, I was blocked by a belligerent throng chanting this. They behaved like the Nazi brown shirts and one tried to set my hair on fire. They espouse women's rights but turn around and ATTACK women. Their logic is non-existent.

So, you'll excuse me for believing protesting peacefully is okay. However, assaults, riots, vandalism, threats, and civil disobedience are not.

Saw a feature on this a few days ago (I think on Inside Edition). Artistic freedom and all, but this was raunchy and in poor taste, not unlike Kathy Griffin's stunt with the severed head.

Delta, Bank of America Drop Sponsorship of NYC Public Theater over Onstage ‘Trump’ Stabbing

“Bank of America supports art programs worldwide, including an 11-year partnership with The Public Theater and Shakespeare in the Park,” a spokesperson for the company told the New York Daily News Sunday. “The Public Theater chose to present Julius Caesar in a way that was intended to provoke and offend. Had this intention been made known to us, we would have decided not to sponsor it.”

Where was the uproar when Caesar was portrayed as Obama? Why is this different?

    Review from The American Conservative:
Obama’s Ides Of March: The Acting Company Production of Julius Caesar

"This could all come off as very cheap and obvious, but it doesn’t for two reasons."

"And the play is riveting right up through Antony’s funeral oration, which is delivered with a fine sense of rhythm by Zachary Fine; his Antony is conscious from the beginning of what he has to do, but plainly gains confidence as the oration goes on. And then . . . well, then it all falls apart. "

The falling apart refers to two Republicans, not Caesar portrayed as Obama.

Such activities may be in poor taste, but they're not illegal.

It makes for any interesting interpretation. I've seen Hamlet as set in present day, although the characters couldn't be interpreted as being anyone else it made for a new twist on a classic. I think there was also a modern day Hamlet movie.

Shakespeare's plays have been done and done again and it takes courage and creativity to switch them up.

See West Side Story (Romeo and Juliet, wrong ending though), and Steve Martin's Roxanne (a favorite of mine, though it also has the wrong ending) which is Rostand's Cyrano in present times.

    Modern twists are always interesting.

Plus for years it's been assumed that certain fictional characters are based on or portrayed by an actor based on actual people.

Inherit the Wind and The Crucible are great examples. Those are the first two that come to mind, but you're right - it's happened, and sometimes the results are brilliant.
