LAKE TWP.*A couple, returning from vacation over the weekend, were found dead Monday afternoon in their home at 1345 Mount Pleasant St. NE in what Stark County law enforcement officers are investigating as a double homicide.

The victims, Rogell E. John II, 71, and his wife, Roberta R. John, 64, returned home from a vacation Sunday, according to Stark County Sheriff George Maier.

“There was no forced entry,” Maier said at a Monday night press briefing. “It is believed the suspect in this instance knew the victims.”

As of Monday evening, county sheriff deputies had no one in custody in connection with the homicides.

“Anytime there is a homicide you hope an arrest is imminent,” Maier said.

The home is in a suburban neighborhood about a mile northeast of North Canton. It was the couple’s son, who lives in Mount Vernon, who alerted local authorities. That telephone call came in at 4:16 p.m. Monday. The couple’s son became concerned when he was not able to contact his parents by phone during the day. Maier said when the son got off work Monday, he drove to Stark County.

George Brinkman, 45, whose last known address was 7933 Norriton Circle NW in North Canton, is already in custody in North Royalton, where authorities said he is a suspect in a triple homicide.

Police on Monday identified the North Royalton victims as 45-year-old Suzanne Taylor and her daughters, 21-year-old Taylor Pifer, a senior fashion design student at Kent State University, and 18-year-old Kylie Pifer.

UPDATE: Suspect in custody after Brunswick standoff, possibly related to North Royalton, Stark County killings

A man wanted for questioning in connection with five murders in two counties is in custody after an overnight standoff in Brunswick.

George Brinkman, 45, was taken into custody by Brunswick police around 5:24 a.m. today after an eight-hour standoff at a home on Valley Forge Drive. Brunswick police Lt. Steven Hoover said a stun gun was used on Brinkman, who had a gun in his possession. Brinkman was taken to the Brunswick Family Health Center for examination before being turned over to North Royalton Police, who were on the scene during the standoff.

Hoover said Brinkman has no apparent violent criminal history in Medina County. Investigators from the FBI were at the scene at the Brunswick home, but declined to offer details on their investigation.

Suspect charged in Lake Twp double homicide also connected to North Royalton triple homicide

George Brinkman Jr. is charged with murder in the deaths of 71-year-old Rogell Eugene John II and 64-year-old Roberta Ray John. The couple was found dead in their home on Mt. Pleasant NW on Monday.

Police used the GPS on a cell phone to track Brinkman in Brunswick where he had a standoff with police Monday night and into Tuesday morning. The standoff ended peacefully and he was taken to an undisclosed hospital to be evaluated. He is now being held in the North Royalton Jail.

Suspect in Lake double homicide was house-sitting for victims

A longtime employee and family friend whom a Lake Township couple trusted enough to house-sit while they were on vacation is accused of killing them.

The deaths of Rogell and Roberta John in their Mt. Pleasant Street NW home came less than 24 hours after George C. Brinkman Jr., 45, killed three women in a North Royalton home, according to North Royalton police.

Brinkman was arrested early Tuesday, accused of killing five people:

Rogell E. John II, 71, and Roberta R. John, 64, shot to death in their Lake Township home.

Suzanne Taylor, 45, and her daughters, Taylor Pifer, 21, and Kylie Pifer, 18.

Two murder warrants were issued in Stark County for Brinkman’s arrest Tuesday morning. Court records indicate Brinkman used a firearm to kill the Johns.

George Brinkman is expected to plead guilty in Stark Common Pleas Court to all charges in the 2017 fatal shootings of a Lake Township couple. Even though he is pleading guilty, he still must have a trial before three judges because prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

George Brinkman, if convicted of aggravated murder following his expected guilty plea and a trial before three judges, faces the death penalty or a life prison term with no chance for parole or a chance for parole after 25 or 30 years.

Brinkman found guilty in Lake Township slayings

Oct 1, 2019

"The sentencing phase of the trial continues Wednesday before a three-judge panel....

Earlier Tuesday, Brinkman pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated murder, two counts of aggravated robbery and single charges of aggravated burglary and tampering with evidence.

Despite the guilty pleas, a trial was still conducted by a three-judge panel because the defendant faces the death penalty.

Prosecutors called on investigators to testify and played a video recording of Brinkman’s statements. The defense didn’t call any witnesses.

After around 30 minutes of deliberations, Judges Chryssa Hartnett, Kristin Farmer and Taryn Heath found Brinkman guilty of all charges tied to the death of Bobbi and Gene John.

Then the trial went immediately into the sentencing phase late Tuesday afternoon before recessing.

Stark County Public Defender Tammi Johnson and attorney Aaron Kovalchik called Brinkman’s ex-wife and two friends to testify in an effort to spare his life.

In an opening statement, Kovalchik said Brinkman suffered emotional abuse and other childhood traumas.

Brinkman’s mother died, his brother committed suicide and he battled depression and went through periods of homelessness, the attorney said. Also cited by the defense is Brinkman’s significant mental health problems.

The defense will continue its presentation Wednesday....'

Murderer George Brinkman: No excuses, give me death (with clip)

"He read a statement in court Wednesday, telling the judges he deserves the harshest punishment.

CANTON George Brinkman argued for his own death sentence Wednesday, telling a panel of three judges he deserves the harshest of punishments.

Stepping to the witness stand, the 47-year-old Stark County man apologized for murdering Roberta (Bobbi) and Rogell (Gene) John in June 2017. Brinkman said he wasn’t making excuses for taking their lives.

“They were extremely kind, caring and wonderful and people who did not deserve to be killed by me,” he said. ”... I’m so very sorry for the all the pain and suffering I have caused the families and friends of Gene and Bobbi. I know that will never be enough but it’s all I have.”

Brinkman argued against the mitigating circumstances in his own case. “Yes, I had a horrible childhood ... yes, I’ve had a lot of bad things happen to me in my life, so what? Other (people have) had it worse and never went around killing people they care about.”..."

Stark County judges hand George Brinkman two more death sentences

October 3, 2019

"George Brinkman has already been sentenced to death in a Cuyahoga County case.

CANTON A three-judge panel rendered a verdict of two death sentences Thursday for the man who murdered a Lake Township couple in the summer of 2017.

George C. Brinkman, 47, didn’t react visibly upon hearing the decision from Stark County Common Pleas Court Judge Chryssa Hartnett.

He stared straight ahead as the judge delivered the death sentences for the aggravated murders of Rogell (Gene) and Roberta (Bobbi) John, a couple he had known for more than 10 years.

Audible emotion was heard from some relatives of the Johns seated in the gallery. After the hearing, family members hugged and cried...."

This is the definition of tragedy. I am glad that he claimed accountability. I am sad that these people were his "friends".

The Supreme Court of Ohio today confirmed the death sentence of a man who requested capital punishment for killing a North Canton couple whose house he was watching while they vacationed.

The Supreme Court unanimously affirmed a three-judge panel’s decision to sentence George C. Brinkman to death for the 2017 murder of Rogell “Gene” and Roberta “Bobbi” John. Brinkman was a longtime family friend of the Johns, until he shot and beat them to death before fleeing with $140 of their cash. He pleaded guilty to the crimes and waived his right to a jury trial.
