EU legal action against Czech Rep, Hungary, Poland for not taking refugees

I hope they continue to #RESIST.

A friend who does large group travel tours said, due to terror threats, she has had numerous groups abort plans to go to Germany, UK and France in favor of Poland (maybe Hungary & CR too?). She said none of them have cared about the cost to change at the last minute.

A performing arts teen group in my area changed their summer tour from Germany, to Budapest and the Czech Republic, due to parent concerns over safety. They plan the tour destination a year in advance, but changed the destination this year 6 months ahead. Some parents expressed that they didn't feel comfortable with France, Germany, or the U.K. as European destinations for a group of teen girls, given the threats in Europe in the past 2 years.

It's very sad that the terrorist threat situation in Europe is changing some aspects of tourism. Perhaps good for emerging economies like Hungary, but sad that tourists feel some previously popular destinations are now too risky.

We will have to see how all tourism to Europe is affected over the next few years to really understand the impact of what's happening.

Austria has bluntly told the EU that it does not want to accept any more refugees, arguing that it has already taken in enough.

Vienna wants an exemption from receiving any more asylum-seekers, in a blow to the EU’s flailing relocation scheme.

Austria took in around 90,000 asylum seekers in 2015, representing more than one percent of its population.

Many of them were Syrians who had fled the war in their homeland and reached Austria after crossing from Turkey to Greece and then following the so-called Balkan route.

"We believe an exception is necessary for Austria for having already fulfilled its obligation. We will discuss that with the European Commission," Christian Kern, the Chancellor, said on Tuesday. "We will send a letter as quickly as possible and then begin discussions." The tough talk was viewed as an attempt by the centrist coalition to undermine support for the far-Right Freedom Party.

Under the plan adopted in September 2015, at the height of the migrant crisis, 160,000 asylum seekers who had made it to Greece and Italy were to be resettled in other EU countries over two years. But so far only around 15,000 have been relocated. The scheme expires in September.

BRUSSELS (AP) — The Latest on migrants and asylum-seekers in Europe (all times local):

    5 p.m.

The Polish government spokesman says that Warsaw respects but does not agree with the decision of the European Commission to launch legal actions against Poland and two other countries that have refused to accept refugees as part of a European Union resettlement plan.

The European Commission said Tuesday that Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic have breached their legal obligations to take some refugees as part of the 2015 plan, which is aimed at sharing the burden of 160,000 migrants at camps in Italy and Greece.

Rafal Bochenek, spokesman for the conservative government of Prime Minister Beata Szydlo, said the Polish leadership does not agree with the Commission's decision. He said it has been saying from the very beginning that the forced relocation of people is not a good solution to the migration crisis.

    4:45 p.m.

Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka says his country is not ready to change its view of a European Union migrant sharing plan, following an announcement that the EU is launching legal action against the Czech Republic and two other countries for failing to take in enough refugees.

Sobotka said in a statement on Tuesday: "The Czech Republic doesn't agree with the relocation system based on migrant quotas. And given the worsened security situation in Europe and also that the quota system is not functioning, it won't participate in it."

Sobotka said his government was ready to "consistently defend our view at the EU level and at the relevant court institutions."

The Czech Republic was supposed to accept some 2,600 refugees until September but so far has taken only 12, all of them from Greece.

Why does anyone think Brexit happened? The Uk has far too much immigration from any country, and the Poles, Roumanians and others from that area are a joke. The UK is saturated with these people.
