Homegrown Terrorism and why the Threat of Right-Wing Extremism is Rising in America

Murders and other violent attacks perpetrated by U.S. far-right extremists compose the visible tip of an iceberg. The rest of this iceberg is under water and out of sight. It includes hundreds of attacks every year that damage property and intimidate communities, such as the recent attempted burning of an African-American family’s garage in Schodack, New York. The garage was also defaced with racist graffiti.

Data my team collected at the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point show that the significant growth in far-right violence in recent years is happening at the base of the iceberg. While the main reasons for that are still not clear, it is important to remember that changes in societal norms are usually reflected in behavioral changes. Hence, it is more than reasonable to suspect that extremist individuals engage in such activities because they sense that their views are enjoying growing social legitimacy and acceptance, which is emboldening them to act on their bigotry.
Despite an uptick in far-right violence and the Trump administration’s plan to increase the Department of Homeland Security budget by 6.7 percent to US$44.1 billion in 2018, the White House wants to cut spending for programs that fight non-Muslim domestic terrorism.

A synopsis of radical-right terrorist plots, conspiracies and racist rampages since the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995. It includes a roster of murdered law enforcement officials.

Scroll to 2004 and you'll be able to read about the right wing terrorists who murdered a bank guard then pointed their guns at me. I testified at their trial.

The protests following the Oscar Grant shooting.*In 2009, a police officer*for Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) shot Grant as he was being detained, later claiming that he thought he was firing his taser. Since the shooting involved cop and a*black victim, protests ensued in Oakland, CA.

The protests*quickly*disintegrated into rioting and looting.
Occupy Wall Street.*The left-wing movement in 2011 spawned numerous sexual assaults, rapes, destruction of property and all kinds other shocking and nonsensical violence.

"protests that shut down Trump's March campaign rally in Chicago, IL.*Trump had to cancel his rally due to security concerns, as there were some fights*between the anti-Trump protesters and Trump supporters, even after the event had been canceled. For instance, a woman punched a 20-year-old man for simply being a Trump supporter in front of a crowd of anti-Trump protestors, including a 10-year-old girl that was with her.
Anti-Trump ****s*attack Trump supporters in San Jose, CA.*When Trump came to San Jose for a rally in June, the following occurred:
Protesters jumped on cars, pelted Trump supporters with eggs and water balloons, snatched signs and stole “Make America Great” hats off supporters’ heads before burning the hats and snapping selfies with the charred remains.
Several people were caught on camera punching Trump supporters. At least one attacker was arrested,*according to CNN, although police did not release much information."

"The riots that occurred at U.C. Berkeley in response to the planned Milo Yiannopoulos speaking event.*Not only did the riots cause the event to be canceled, the following also occurred:
A woman wearing a "Make America Great Again"*pepper sprayed in the face
Using metal poles, black-clad ****s*chased down and beat Milo supporters
    More Trump/Milo supporters*pepper sprayed, presumably by*these same ****s

"From the 1920s through the 1980s, communists and socialists in the Soviet Union, Southeast Asia, Africa, and Central and South America wrought a level of death and destruction nearly unprecedented in human history, murdering nearly 100 million human beings — all in the name of social justice."

    Very good. Scary too.

To summarize, the government put out a report warning about the dangers of far-right extremism, the mainstream right subsequently identified their own ideology with this same extremism, then the Right successfully pressured the government to stop investigating this kind of terrorism.
Conservatives — and, it now appears, the mainstream press — love to complain about the “intolerant Left.” But only one side of the political spectrum has been engaged in consistent, sustained, politically motivated violence for the last two decades.

'Legitimized in their hatred': a weekend of violence in Trump's America

"Trump supporters are now feeling legitimized in their hatred and wanting to act out further,” said Ryan Lenz, senior investigative writer with the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), which has tracked a rise in hate groupsand incidents during Trump’s campaign and since his inauguration. “It speaks to a climate of hate and intolerance across the country. These three are not isolated.”
