2017.06.26 - Three CNN journalists resign over retracted Trump-Russia story

Three journalists from CNNís investigative unit are leaving the network after the retraction of their June 22 story connecting an ally of President Trump to a Russian investment fund.

The story, citing an anonymous source, said Senate investigators were examining a meeting between Wall Street financier Anthony Scaramucci and an executive for the Russian Direct Investment Fund. The $10-billion fund makes direct investments in Russian companies.

We are the watchers. We are witnesses. We see what has gone before. We see what happens now, at this dangerous moment in human history. We see what's going to happen - what will surely happen - unless we come together: we - the Peoples of all Nations - to restore peace and harmony and balance to the Earth, our Mother.

And CNN moved quickly to remove the story that was published without the standar process for publication being taken. Kudos to them.

the story was not reported on their televised shows, only a print copy on their website and social media that was removed, replaced with an explanation and links to it were disabled.

In a staff meeting Monday afternoon, investigative unit members were told that the retraction did not mean the facts of the story were necessarily wrong. Rather, it meant that "the story wasn't solid enough to publish as-is," one of the people briefed on the investigation said.

    The story is here.

On June 22, 2017, CNN.com published a story connecting Anthony Scaramucci with investigations into the Russian Direct Investment Fund.
    *
That story did not meet CNN's editorial standards and has been retracted. Links to the story have been disabled. CNN apologizes to Mr. Scaramucci.

Despite their deletion of the story, thanks to The Wayback-Machine, we can see what the original story said...

So, what's your feeling on this? Did they create a story out of whole cloth, or is the story true and threats of litigation hung over them? Is there a "Deep Throat" feeding information to the press?

"The site added that, although the investigation found the story “wasn’t solid enough” for publication, CNN has not said the story is false."

"On Friday, CNN retracted a story published by my team. As executive editor of that team, I have resigned," Haris said in a statement. "I've been with CNN since 2001, and am sure about one thing: This is a news organization that prizes accuracy and fairness above all else. I am leaving, but will carry those principles wherever I go."

Perhaps this is not the end of the Russian Direct Investment Fund story.

Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told the White House Press Corps on Tuesday that CNN was “a disgrace to journalism.”

Sanders’s remarks came after CNN retracted a “fake news” story over the weekend alleging links between a member of President Donald Trump’s transition team and a Russian firm, and after an exposť on Monday by James O’Keefe’s Project Veritas showed a CNN producer admitting the Russia story was “bull*****.”

There’s a video circulating now — whether it’s accurate or not, I don’t know, but I would encourage everybody in this room, and frankly everybody across the country, to take a look at it. I think if it is accurate, I think it’s a disgrace to all of media, to all of journalism.

I have mad respect for CNN. They admitted they made a mistake and did the right thing. A sign of a news organization that takes its reporting and reputation seriously.
Can't say the same for the POTUS or Breitbart.

IMO, CNN wants to distance themselves from the ensuing lawsuits, so the reporters were asked to "resign". It wa not about ethics in journalism. It's always about the moo-lah
