Actress Olivia de Havilland sues over Feud: Bette and Joan series

"Olivia de Havilland is suing FX and the producer of 'Feud' for using her identity without permission and portraying her in a 'false light' in the miniseries.

The Gone with the Wind actress who turns 101 on Saturday filed her lawsuit against the cable outlet and creator/producer Ryan Murphy to the LA County Superior Court Friday.

The eight-episode miniseries, which premiered on March 5, is about the rivalry between Bette Davis, played by Susan Sarandon, and Joan Crawford, played by Jessica Lange.

Though the show is intended to dramatize actual historical events, de Havilland said she was never consulted or asked for permission to use her identity, despite the fact that she claims she is the only survivor of the events the series depicts.

The suit further claims that Catherine Zeta Jones' portrayal of de Havilland, who was a confidant of Davis', put the 110-year-old actress in 'a false light to sensationalize the series'.

The first season of Murphy’s latest anthology series for the cable network opened with Catherine Zeta-Jones as de Havilland, explaining the famous feud between Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. Zeta-Jones’s character would reappear several times in the series; de Havilland was one of Davis’s Hollywood confidantes. But the real-life de Havilland says she was not approached for permission. According to the Los Angeles Times, the actress’s attorneys say she’s suing “based on the unauthorized commercial use of Dame Olivia’s name and identity in the FX hit series.” They claim she is the only character portrayed who is still alive, though Bette Davis’s daughter B.D., portrayed on the show as a teenager played by Kiernan Shipka, is alive as well. (FX and Murphy’s team declined to comment when approached by the Times. We have also reached out for comment, and will update this post accordingly.)

^ Olivia and her sister, Joan Fontaine had been estranged for many years. De Havilland was "surprised" to learn of her sister's passing and said she was sorry to hear the news. Olivia De Havilland is 101 today. She was born July 1, 1935.

Olivia de Havilland sues over ‘Feud’ depiction

    Lynn Elber, Associated Press Published 10:43 p.m. ET June 30, 2017 | Updated 10:43 p.m. ET June 30, 2017

Los Angeles — Hollywood great Olivia de Havilland has launched her own sequel to the TV series “Feud” — a lawsuit.

The double Oscar-winning actress filed suit Friday against FX Networks and producer Ryan Murphy’s company, alleging the drama inaccurately depicts her as a gossipmonger and is an invasion of privacy.

The suit was filed in Los Angeles on Friday — one day before de Havilland turns 101. The actress, whose credits include the role of Melanie Hamilton in “Gone with the Wind,” lives in Paris...

Sorry 1935 was the date of a film OdH made that is featured on her IMDb Bio page. She was born July 1, 1916. The sisters were 15 months apart. Joan Fontaine was born 10/22/1913 and died on 12/15/2013. The sisters were born in Tokyo where there father was a foreign diplomat. Both sisters are among my favorite classic film stars.

    Happy 101st birthday, Olivia!
