NY - Selina Akther, 28, shot to death, Queens, 28 Dec 2005

A U.S. soldier from Queens, on leave from the Army, is facing a manslaughter charge over the shooting death of a young mother.

Selina Akhdar was shot in the head Thursday night as she looked out her apartment window after hearing a commotion on the street below.
Police say the shot was fired by 23-year-old Danny Carpio.

They say Carpio was standing in front of the victim's building with a group of drunken men when he fired several shots into the air.

The victim's husband discovered his wife lying in blood on the floor.

Prosecutors say 23-year-old Private Danny Carpio has addresses in Killeen, Texas, and Queens.

Authorities say Carpio had been drinking at a relative's house when he shot his gun three or four times outside a Queens apartment complex.

The stray bullet hit Selina Akthel while she stood at her fifth-floor window. Akthel would have turned 29 on New Year's Eve.

Just when I think that I have seen the most depraved things a human can do to another human, somebody posts a new story...........

Why is it that when a custodial parent fails to provide for a child it is called neglect and is a criminal matter. But when a non custodial parent fails to provide it is called failure to support and is a civil matter?

I wonder if he is home on leave from the middle east. My son is home (from Iraq) for 10 days and he seems a bit testy- and not quite the same boy who left- I'm not taking up for this kid- I don't like guns, and firing guns for fun into the air went out with Marshall Dillon on Gunsmoke- especially in a populated area like Queens.

Just plain DUMB is what this is!

God Bless her family. May they find it in their hears to forgive this act of stupidity.

This guy probaby hasn't been in Iraq. He's only been in the Army 6 months, just got here to Fort Hood a month ago.

    From June 2006:

An Army private who carelessly fired off a shot into the night sky in Queens and killed an innocent woman at her window was slapped with four to 12 years in prison – moments after he offered the victim’s family an apology...

Carpio pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter on May 8.
