2017.07.06 - Betsy DeVos sued by Massachusetts

Massachusetts Sues Betsy DeVos Over Student Loan Protections

    By STACY COWLEYJULY 6, 2017

The Massachusetts attorney general filed a lawsuit on Thursday against the Education Department and its secretary, Betsy DeVos, challenging the department’s move last month to freeze new rules for erasing the federal loan debt of student borrowers who were cheated by colleges that acted fraudulently.

The rules, known as borrower defense, were finalized in October by the Obama administration after years of negotiation and review, and they had been scheduled to take effect on July 1. But after President Trump took office, Ms. DeVos paused the planned changes, citing a federal lawsuit filed in May by an association of for-profit colleges in California that is seeking to block the rules.

Ms. DeVos also criticized the rules, calling them “a muddled process that’s unfair to students and schools,” and she said she would establish a new rule-making committee to reconsider the matter from scratch...

19 AGs sue DeVos for delaying for-profit college rules

    Collin Binkley, Associated Press Published 11:10 a.m. ET July 6, 2017 | Updated 11:10 a.m. ET July 6, 2017
Democratic attorneys general in 18 states and the District of Columbia are suing Education Secretary Betsy DeVos over her decision to suspend rules meant to protect students from abuses by for-profit colleges.

The lawsuit was filed Thursday in federal court in Washington and demands implementation of borrower defense to repayment rules.

The rules aim to make schools financially responsible for fraud and forbid them from forcing students to resolve complaints outside court.

They were created under President Barack Obama’s administration and were to take effect July 1.

On June 14, DeVos announced the rules would be delayed and rewritten, saying they created “a muddled process that’s unfair to students and schools.” ...

After 6 months on job, DeVos still highly divisive

Maria Danilova, Associated Press Published 10:52 a.m. ET Aug. 12, 2017

Washington — Among the paintings and photographs that decorate Education Secretary Betsy DeVos’ sunlit, spacious office is the framed roll call from her Senate confirmation. It’s a stark reminder of the bruising process that spurred angry protests, some ridicule and required the vice president’s tie-breaking “yes” vote.

Six months on the job, DeVos is no less divisive.

Critics see her as hostile to public education and indifferent to civil rights, citing her impassioned push for school choice and the repeal of some protections for LGBT students.

Conservative allies wish she had been less polarizing and more effective in promoting her agenda, noting that the department’s budget requests are stalled in Congress and no tangible school choice plan has emerged.

    DeVos is undeterred...

DeVos speaking invite to MSU center sparks backlash

Kim Kozlowski, The Detroit News Published 12:44 p.m. ET Sept. 1, 2017

Can Michigan State University’s values be bought?

That’s the question that faculty and students are asking as they lobby President Lou Anna Simon to rescind an invitation for U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos to speak at the grand opening of the university’s Grand Rapids Research Center later this month.

DeVos is scheduled to speak Sept. 20 at the Grand Rapids Research Center — built to continue research of the College of Human Medicine, which expanded in 2010 to the Secchia Center, a privately-funded facility in downtown Grand Rapids. It was constructed for medical education, but not designed for research laboratories...
