2017.07.06 - Government Ethics Director resigns

Government Ethics Chief Resigns, Casting Uncertainty Over Agency

Walter M. Shaub Jr., the government’s top ethics watchdog, who has repeatedly gone head-to-head with the Trump administration over conflicts of interest, said on Thursday that he was calling it quits.

Mr. Shaub’s five-year term as the director of the Office of Government Ethics is not set to expire until January, but with little chance of renewal and an appealing offer in hand from a nonpartisan advocacy group, he said the time was right to leave.

“There isn’t much more I could accomplish at the Office of Government Ethics, given the current situation,” Mr. Shaub said in an interview on Thursday. “O.G.E.’s recent experiences have made it clear that the ethics program needs to be strengthened.”

Watchdog groups fear for ethics office after resignation

“This resignation, unfortunately, may weaken the work of a crucial federal agency that has been overwhelmed by ethics requests from the public and addressing the complex finances and associated conflicts from Trump’s wealthy nominees,” said Alexander Howard, the deputy director of the Sunlight Foundation.
“His resignation places the integrity of the OGE in doubt. President Donald Trump now has the opportunity to select the next head of the ethics agency,” said Craig Holman, the government affairs lobbyist at Public Citizen.

    From January:

Trump aide Reince Priebus warns ethics chief to ‘be careful’

Ethics office Director Walter Shaub last week criticized Trump's plan to shift ownership of his businesses to his sons, and his office has sought to influence Trump on the issue on Twitter for several weeks.

"The head of the government ethics ought to be careful because that person is becoming extremely political," Priebus said on ABC News's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos."
