COLD CASE: How did an Ontario man end up dead in a Michigan dump?

Kevin Arendt lived near Square One. Five years after his death, police still aren’t certain whether his death was by misadventure or murder

News Jul 10, 2017 by Louie Rosella

A drunken Kevin Arendt stumbles into the elevator of his city centre condominium in the early morning of June 28, 2012.

He exits on the second floor, even though he didn't live on that level.
This is the last image Peel Regional Police have of him alive
What happened next is anybody's guess, as the 38-year-old man's body was found in a Michigan dump two days later.

More than five years later, Peel Regional Police admit they are stumped as to how he met his demise.
"We're at the end of the rope here and we're looking for a tip from the public," said now-retired Homicide Insp. Randy Cowan in a 2014 interview. "A complete 360 of his life at the time of his death has been conducted, and we still don't know if this was misadventure or murder."
Here's what police know: sometime during the evening of July 27, 2012, Arendt takes his Jeep Liberty and goes out drinking. He visits a few bars and restaurants, including Croc Rock on Kingsbridge Garden Circle and PK Creek Bar & Grill on Dundas St. W. He meets two women at Croc Rock and they accompany him to a nightclub, but he's still alive when they leave him later that night, according to police
    .

In a later sighting of him, Arendt is seen stumbling into the lobby of his condo building on Webb Drive just after 12:30 a.m. June 28 and taking the elevator. He gets off on the second floor, which isn't his floor. He lived in the condo complex with his fiancée.
Arendt never made it to his apartment and his fiancée reported him missing later that day. His body was discovered two days later by a landfill operator at the Brent Run Landfill near Flint, Mich.
Did Arendt, in his drunken state, somehow meet foul play that resulted in someone killing him and then dumping his body in a garbage bin?

    • Did Arendt, due to being intoxicated, somehow slip down a garbage chute in the complex and die in the garbage bin?
    • Did someone accidentally run over Arendt in the parking garage and then attempt to get rid of the body?
Police don't know the cause of death. The results of the toxicology test and other testing were also inconclusive.

    A perfect murder?

News Oct 24, 2012 by Louie Rosella

Two women who went into a City Centre nightclub with Arendt the night he disappeared, were interviewed by police in August, but provided no new leads for detectives.
In the last known sighting of him, Arendt is seen stumbling into the lobby of his condo building just after 12:30 a.m. June 28 and attempting to take the elevator.
Police have confirmed Arendt entered the elevator and exited, but not on his floor.
"This case remains open as we are still working on determining the activities of Mr. Arendt before and/or after he was last seen on video (just before 1 a.m. June 28)," Koekkoek said.
Asked if police believe Arendt died inside his building, Koekkoek said he's not sure. There's no information that the man left the building, but, he added, there are ways to leave the complex without being detected by video.
Originally from a Wisconsin, Arendt moved to Mississauga last fall to live with his girlfriend of several years, said his younger brother, Eric. He had decided on a teaching career and was pursuing a master’s degree at Medaille College in Buffalo.

was Toronto garbage being transported to the Michigan landfill or did someone drive across the border with him in their trunk?

was that a dog coming around the corner behind him just as the video ends?
dogs have owners ... that person and their dog probably followed him into the elevator and may be the last person to see him alive ... I assume LE has interviewed that person

TO's commercial garbage has been going to MI for many years, so I expect that this is how his body ended up in Michigan.

Some 50 trucks off-load trash at the dump every morning and between 60 and 80 per cent come from the GTA.

Arendt's blue Jeep was later found parked on Enfield Place, which is within walking distance of Arendt's high-rise condominium.

The second floor also leads to the parking garage, but there's no sign of Arendt in the surveillance footage from the garage.
Police believe Arendt may have arranged a meeting with someone on the second floor, as surveillance footage shows him fiddling with his phone just prior to getting into the elevator.
"There could be that magic witness out there who knows Mr. Arendt's final moments," Cowan said. "We're going to need a witness who can tell us what happened before we can decide one way or another."

Cowan added Arendt's death may have occurred "in isolation," meaning nobody witnessed it.

Police say while they're not ruling out anything, there's no indication Arendt committed suicide.
Police aren't even certain whether Arendt died inside his building.
Anyone with information is asked to call police at 905-453-2121, ext. 3205.

yeah, who lives on the second floor indeed. I am sure they started there, or at least covered that. Have to go back and read to get caught up.

Good catch! it does seem to be dog, but it remind me of a small beige tiger somehow, maybe a large cat?

Just what I thought! When I first watched the video I thought it was a man at the end, then realized it seemed to be a dog. But why was the video cut exactly at that moment? Did the LE see the footage after that, when the dog and its owner appeared close?
