NH - Gregory Auriemma, 63, White Mountains, 24 June 2017

Gregory Auriemma, 63, of Brick, N.J., was last seen in North Conway and is believed to have been camping in the area of Mizpah Spring Hut in Bean's Grant about June 28th.

"Further information was obtained regarding and abandon camp site near the Dry River Trail in Cutts Grant. A conservation officer search and rescue team confirmed today the abandon camp site was Auriemma's," Fish and Game said in a statement Sunday.

Conservation officers have been interviewing hikers in the area in hopes someone might have seen something that might lead searchers to Auriemma. A ground team and New Hampshire National Guard Blackhawk helicopter searched the area of the Dry River drainage to no avail.

"The Dry River area is a remote portion of the White Mountains that takes searchers approximately a 4-hour hike to access the area to begin searching," Fish and Game said.

Crews searched the area around the Dry River drainage on the ground and with a National Guard helicopter but did not find Auriemma.

Now Fish and Game officials ask anyone who has been in the area and may have seen or met with Auriemma to call them at 603-271-3361.

Alexander "Greg" Auriemma, an attorney from Brick, NJ and chairman of the Ocean County NJ chapter of the Sierra Club, was last seen June 24 departing the White Mountains Hostel in Conway, New Hampshire, with a large hiking backpack.

He went missing sometime around July 5. He was supposed to return to the hostel on that date.

The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department initially worked off his last known location in North Conway, and later in the week developed information that he had stayed in the area of the Mizpah Spring Hut in Bean’s Grant on or about June 28.

Further information was then obtained linking Auriemma to an abandoned campsite near the Dry River Trail in Cutts Grant.

A rescue team confirmed on Saturday that the abandoned campsite was Auriemma’s.

The Dry River area is a very remote portion of the White Mountains; searchers must hike approximately four hours to access the area to begin searching.

Authorities are asking the public for any information available from hikers who have been in this area and may have met up with Auriemma.

“We’re very troubled and concerned about Greg being missing for so long,” New Jersey Sierra Club president Jeff Tittel said in a statement Monday. “The New Jersey Sierra Club is asking for anyone to join the search, especially experienced hikers in the area.”

The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, which is participating in the search, has determined that Auriemma stayed in the area of the Mizpah Spring Hut in Bean’s Grant on or about June 28.
Auriemma was recognized by President Barack Obama as a “Champion of Change” for his efforts with the New Jersey Sierra Club. He was active in recovery efforts after Hurricane Sandy in addition to working on other issues related to climate change and sea-level rises. Auriemma helped restart the Ocean County group about 20 years ago, according to Tittel’s statement.

Anyone with information about Auriemma or who would like to participate in the search should contact the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department at 603-271-3361.
