Police trying to piece together last hours of 13-year-old B.C. girl found dead in park
Burnaby RCMP are treating the case as a homicide, although they’re still waiting for autopsy results to determine a cause of death. The girl’s body was found in Burnaby’s Central Park shortly after 1 a.m. Wednesday, approximately 12 hours after she was last seen at her family home.

Details are scarce regarding her activities within that 12-hour window before she died. Police say they know she spoke to someone on the phone at 5 p.m., and that she did not appear to be in distress during the conversation. Police did not release details about whom she may have been speaking to, or what she was wearing when her body was found.
A film crew that had been shooting in the area on the night of Shen’s death has also been asked to pack up and get out of the way during the investigation.

The southern section of the park has been cordoned off as part of the investigation.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have seen anything to contact them.

Area residents say it’s unusual for this kind of incident to occur in the community.

It’s the nightmare that gnaws at parents everywhere.

A 13-year-old Burnaby girl reported missing at 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday was found dead less than two hours later in a popular city park.

“Something like this is the biggest fear I have,” Anthony Pezzolla said, cycling with his six-year-old son close to the brush — near Patterson Avenue — where Marissa Shen’s body was discovered at 1:10 a.m. in Central Park, not far from her home.
Teens should always try to go out with a group of friends and not on their own.

Lynn said cellphones may give teens and parents a false sense of security.
“All it is is a phone. It doesn’t do anything. Having a phone doesn’t mean you don’t pay attention and look after yourself,
    ” she said.

Although investigators initially said no one had physically seen Shen since 1 p.m. that day – four hours earlier – new information reveals that Shen was last confirmed to be seen leaving her home at 6 p.m. that day.
"That being said, this now narrows down our timeline," Cpl. Meghan Foster of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team told CTV News.
IHIT is now looking to speak with anyone that was in the area of the crime scene from 6 p.m. onward on Tuesday.

"Her death is still deemed suspicious and we're waiting for an autopsy to learn whether or not she is truly a victim of homicide," said Cpl. Meghan Foster of the Integrated Homicide Investigations Team on Thursday morning.

"Currently, we do not have any suspects."

According to Foster, investigators have narrowed down the timeline around Chen's activities leading up to the discovery of her body. She was last seen leaving her home in the Central Park area at 6 p.m. PT, Tuesday evening.

Shen, who lives with her family near the park, last made contact with someone by telephone at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The death is being treated as a suspicious, and police are trying to piece together the final hours of her life.

Wijayakoon said the risk to the public is still unclear – no arrests have been made – so people should remain vigilant.

The investigation is trying to determine if she died in a different location before her body was moved to the park.

"We're gathering the evidence to put that theory together and we're relying on people who have information, or who may have seen Ms Shen, to contact us so we can fill in those blanks," said Foster.

"We've received multiple tips and those will be reviewed and followed up on accordingly."

Crime tape is still up in Burnaby’s Central Park and police are stepping up patrols after the discovery of 13-year-old Marrisa Shen’s body Wednesday morning.

Police are revealing little about the teen’s death but they are urging everyone in the area to be on alert.

Several police agencies, including the Vancouver police, are searching the crime scene where Shen’s body was found.
Classmates of Shen’s at Moscrop Secondary School are stunned by her death.

“I was actually somewhere else and my Mom called me and she said someone died at Central Park and I said, ‘oh that’s bad’… and I check online and it’s her and I’m like, ‘oh my gosh’,” said Grade 8 student D G, who described Shen as very quiet.
IHIT Cpl. Meghan Foster asked that while the investigation continues and until more facts are confirmed for people in the area to remain “vigilant.”

At an afternoon news conference Thursday, Cpl. Meghan Foster played a brief surveillance video that shows Shen walking into an apartment building.
The video was captured several hours before Shen’s last known whereabouts. Foster said police are hoping that the video will jar the memories of anyone who may have seen Shen that evening.
In the video, the girl is seen wearing dark shorts and a T-shirt, although the exact colour of her clothes is not clear. Police said she was wearing the same clothes when her body was found.
