East Texas man still missing after 20 years

San Augustine County, Texas (KETK) - On this date on this date 20 years ago a man said he was going to Lake Sam Rayburn.

He hasn't been heard from since and the case is still unsolved.

On the morning of July 21 in 1997 Harold William "Bill" Roland left his family to go fishing but he never came back.

"The (Texas) Rangers were involved and they requested our services to look around the lake, on the water, within the woods and over time we started finding evidence," said Major Jim Ranft, TPWD Game Warden.

Ranft worked on the case and recalls many agencies all working together such as: the Texas Forest Service, DPS, San Augustine County Sheriffs Department and the Texas Rangers.

A little more than a week after being reported missing Roland's truck was found, abandoned and burned.

Then in August his boat trailer was found and in October his boat was found with bullet holes in the pontoons.

In January 1998 the awning to Roland's boat was found but that was the last significant piece of evidence found in this case.

Reward increased in 1997 disappearance of Texas man
AUSTIN, Texas (KWTX) The Texas Department of Public Safety Thursday increased the reward to $6,000 for information leading to an arrest in the 1997 disappearance of an East Texas man whose burned pickup and abandoned boat trailer and pontoon boat were discovered several months after he was reported missing.

Missing Person, Bill Roland

The link above has six articles written after Bill disappeared. Some interesting info: In the article from July 30, 1997, the teens who discovered the truck burned in the woods first noticed the truck a week prior but didn't notice any signs of a fire. Then in August -- articled dated 8/16/97 -- Bill's tools are discovered in the area where his truck was found burned. (Investigators seemed to suggest that someone came back and left the tools *after* law enforcement had recovered the vehicle.)

Finally, this oral interview (it's a PDF) the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame did w/ Former Texas Ranger Sgt. Don Morris in 2006. Go to pages 25-27 of his interview where he discusses the Roland case. Morris says he's "certain" one of Bill's neighbors killed him.

Wow, that's a lot of new info. Good find.

Here's some very interesting information regarding the disappearance of Bill Roland. It's an interview between a Texas Ranger and a journalist. The interview was done to provide background in the life and times of a Ranger and would be kept for posterity in the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame in Waco.

The retired Ranger's name is Don Morris who worked out of Lufkin Texas. The whole account is pretty interesting, although it's a verbatim recorded copy of the interview so there's a lot of disjointed comments. There's also a part where they got a confession without reading the suspect his rights on the tape!! They went back and did it but if that happened now they could have blown the case. The REALLY interesting part, though, starts on page 24.

Details of Disappearance
Roland was last seen during a fishing trip in Powell Park on Lake Sam Rayburn, Texas on July 21, 1997. He was driving his gray 1996 Chevrolet 271 extended cab pickup truck with the Texas license plates number RE6006 at the time. The vehicle had a large orange ladder marked JOC for JO Cheatham Contractors Inc. placed in the back. Roland was vice president of the company in 1997.

He was also traveling with a white 1994 Lowe pontoon boat with a blue stripe and metal top and trailer with the boat number TX9619HL. Roland has never been heard from again. His family members said it is uncharacteristic of Roland to leave without warning.

Roland's truck was discovered abandoned in a dense pine tree thicket about one week after his disappearance. The vehicle was located one-half mile off of Neal Road near FM 844 in Shawnee Prairie, Texas, approximately 30 miles from Roland's camp in Powell Park.

The cab had been completely destroyed by fire. A burned rifle was found underneath the back seat of the truck and an ice chest was located in the vehicle's bed. Roland's company ladder and cellular phone were both missing, but it is possible the phone was destroyed by the flames.

The people who located the truck just days after Roland vanished did not report their find to authorities until the end of the week, as they did not initially notice the cab had been burned.

Tools that Roland carried in the back of his truck were discovered in the same area as his vehicle shortly afterwards. Authorities said that it appeared the tools had been placed at the scene after their initial search ended, as the terrain had been thoroughly covered and no sign of the tools was found earlier in the week. They had not been damaged by the fire inside the vehicle.

Roland's boat trailer was located in August 1997, one month after his disappearance. The trailer was found in a wooded area four miles south of Broaddus, Texas off of State Highway 147. The area was approximately 20 miles from Powell Park.

Roland's pontoon boat was located in October 1997 in a narrow cove off of the Harvey Creek recreational area, which is near the end of FM 2390 in San Augustine County, Texas. The boat's top was missing at the time of discovery. Authorities discovered bullet holes in the pontoons from either a large caliber shotgun or a gunshot.

According to law enforcement, the boat had been carefully placed under a tree. The pontoon boat's awning was recovered by divers in Lake Sam Rayburn near the location of the boat itself in January 1998. Roland's case remains open and unsolved. Foul play is suspected in his disappearance.

Harold William "Bill" Roland

Harold William “Bill” Roland was last seen in San Augustine County, Texas on 07-21-1997. Roland resided in Lufkin, Angelina County, but owned a lake house on Lake Sam Rayburn in San Augustine County. Roland told a witness he planned to go fishing. Roland’s wife reported him missing on the following morning. Also missing were Roland’s pickup, pontoon boat, and boat trailer. During the next three months, Roland’s pickup was found burned in a rural area of Angelina County (arson). Roland’s boat trailer was found abandoned in a National Forest in San Augustine County, and Roland’s pontoon boat was located hidden under willow trees on Lake Sam Rayburn. Pontoons on the boat had been shot, possibly in an attempt to sink the craft. Extensive searches and interviews have not revealed the location of Roland. Investigators suspect Roland was killed.
