The man who police say sexually assaulted and killed an Arlington woman 18 years ago has a history of violent crimes against women that dates back to when he was a teen-ager.
Using DNA evidence, Arlington police cold case investigators have linked Roger Fain Jr. with the death of Linda Donahew, whose nude body was discovered June 1, 1987, inside her southwest Arlington home. She had been strangled and stabbed in the neck.
Fain, 51, now faces a capital murder charge in the case. He is already serving a life term for the 1994 shooting death of his ex-girlfriend, Sandra Dumont of Austin. The former Dallas man also has a lengthy history of crimes against women across Florida and Texas, including kidnapping and aggravated sexual assault, Arlington police Sgt. Mark Simpson said.
Fain was also a suspect in the 1994 death of Darlene Anderson, a Round Rock woman he knew, police said. Anderson, 38, and Fain’s ex-girlfriend Dumont, 39, had gone missing a month apart from each other, according to the Austin American-Statesmanan.

A Round Rock man sentenced to life in prison in 1995 for murdering Austin advertising executive Sandra Dumont and dumping her body in a cow pasture has been linked through DNA evidence to the unsolved 1987 death of a North Texas woman.

Roger Fain, 51, who remains locked up, was charged Tuesday with capital murder in the death of 41-year-old Linda Sue Donahew, who was found naked, stabbed and strangled in her Arlington home on June 1, 1987.

Arlington detectives spoke with Round Rock investigators and found similarities among the deaths of Dumont, 39, Donahew and Darlene Anderson, 38, of Round Rock.

Fain was never charged with Anderson's death because there wasn't enough evidence, but prosecutors have said that he remains the prime suspect. Anderson disappeared around the same time Dumont did, and her body was found in the same pasture off Louis Henna Boulevard.

The women were all attractive, all knew Fain and each had part or all of their clothing cut from their bodies, said Arlington police spokeswoman Christy Gilfour.

The June 1994 disappearance of Anderson, a mother of two, touched off a wave of fear in Round Rock. Her car was found in her driveway and her purse and credit cards were inside her home.

Respected former Arlington homicide detective dies

ARLINGTON — Detective Jim Ford investigated some of city’s highest profile homicide cases, including the abduction and murder of Amber Hagerman in 1996, during his 34-year career with the Arlington Police Department.
Mr. Ford, who served as a criminal investigator for the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office after his 2010 retirement from the police department, died Wednesday. He was 58.

On Sunday, Mr. Ford will be featured in an “On the Case with Paula Zahn” episode about the unsolved slaying of Linda Sue Donahew on the Investigation Discovery channel. Mr. Ford helped investigate what happened to Donahew, 41, who was stabbed, strangled and sexually assaulted inside her Arlington home on June 1, 1987.

I. Introduction

In three issues, Appellant Roger Eugene Fain appeals the trial court’s denial of his post-conviction motion for forensic DNA testing under chapter 64 of the code of criminal procedure. We affirm.

II. Procedural History
In 2007, a jury convicted Appellant of capital murder, and the trial court sentenced him to life imprisonment.[2] This court affirmed his conviction. See Fain v. State, No. 02-08-00002-CR, 2009 WL 2579580 (Tex. App.—Fort Worth Aug. 20, 2009, pet. ref’d) (mem. op., not designated for publication). In April 2010, Appellant filed a pro se application for post-conviction forensic DNA testing pursuant to chapter 64 of the code of criminal procedure. In June, the State filed notice with the trial court setting forth the location of evidence potentially containing biological material. In July 2010, the trial court appointed Appellant DNA counsel. In August 2010, the State filed its reply. In September 2010, the trial court denied Appellant’s DNA motion by written order without a hearing.[3] Through appointed counsel, Appellant appeals the trial court’s order.[4]

III. Factual Background

The indictment alleged that Appellant killed Linda Donahew by strangling her with his hand or hands, or with an object unknown to the grand jury, or by stabbing her with a knife, or by a combination of the strangulation and stabbing, while committing or attempting to commit aggravated sexual assault. Our direct appeal opinion set out the following facts:​

Bonnie Bishop shared a house with her sister, [Linda] Donahew. On June 1, 1987, Bishop left work and arrived home at approximately 8:00 p.m. She entered the house to find her sister’s nude and blood-covered body lying on the floor in a bedroom closet.​

The autopsy revealed that Donahew had died from manual strangulation and that a secondary cause of death was a stab wound to her neck. The postmortem examination also revealed several hairs found clinched in her hands, DNA artifacts in her mouth, and three foreign pubic hairs in the genital area...​

The most dangerous was Roger Eugene Fain Jr., who is imprisoned for murdering a Round Rock woman in 1994. "James Bond, who is retired here from the Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers, was with the Round Rock PD when we caught Fain," said Benningfield.

Also suspected in the deaths of women in 1987 in Arlington and 1994 in Austin, Fain had come to their attention when he took part in searches, the second one with his hand bandaged for injuries from beating the second woman to death, Benningfield said.

The Oct 9, 2019 episode, "Serial Killer Roger Fain" on the podcast "The First Degree" had an interview with a guest who had a brush with this guy - sounds like he was planning on going after her mom but got spooked when she recognized him. She had met him at a Home Depot in Round Rock or Pflugerville, TX and he was charming and handsome and helpful. Then he showed up at her house the next day, knocked on her door, and asked about whether she was interested in breeding her dog. When she recognized him from the store, he got flustered, clammed up, and left. Also the dog was barking at him and wouldn't stop.

They don't know how he got their address - whether he left work to follow them home the day before or if the piece of paper they had written on regarding their home improvement needs happened to have their address on it.

A few weeks later was when they saw him on the news regarding killing another woman.
