On November 10, 1998, the body of a man was discovered in a container shipped by the "Cast" Company, which was being stored in the Port of Montreal. The individual had taken refuge, with food, in the shipping container which had arrived in Montreal by boat (the "Canmar Valour") from Livorno, Italy.

The Italian clothing and money found on his person made me think that he arrived from Italy hidden in the container, or if homeless, maybe a crew member gave him the money?
speculation
Maybe he was a crew member? Shipping crews are not necessarily well paid or well treated.

Well this is interesting, and tragic- involves the same ship where this uid was located, the "Canmar Valour"

Authorities trying to crack mystery around two Romanian men found decomposed in shipping container in Eau Claire

More than three months after two men's decomposed remains were found in a shipping container, authorities are still trying to determine who they are and the details of how they ended up in Eau Claire.

U.S. customs and immigration officials know the men were Romanian and paid smugglers what for them would have been a large sum of money to help them get to America.

They planned to escape from their steel prison once at sea on a container ship, hoping to be granted asylum when they reached Canada, the first stop on their journey.

While the discovery of their bodies Sept. 6 was unusual for an inland city like Eau Claire, it was not an isolated incident.

Recently, eight bodies were found in a shipping container in Ireland. The freight container had been shipped from Milan, Italy, and the stowaways, including five people found alive but nearly comatose, were from eastern Europe.

Last week, four bodies were found in a container before it left Italy. The container had been fumigated with insecticide and officials suspect the stowaways died from breathing the toxins.
Robert Becker, senior special agent with the U.S. Customs Service in Milwaukee, said this is the first such incident he could recall in the 10 years he has been a customs agent in Milwaukee.

From the time the container was loaded on the Italian cargo ship Canmar Valour on Aug. 10, it followed a circuitous route from Livorno to Montreal, Toronto, Detroit, Chicago, Milwaukee and Minneapolis before arriving by train in Eau Claire Sept. 6.

I wonder how long this ship would take from Livorno to Montreal (including the possible stops on the way...

Found some missing italian guys (1997) on Doe site that would match:
Diego Ferraro was last seen in Favara in the afternoon of November 11, 1997. He left home with a childhood friend who claims to have dropped him off in the center of the country, and that Diego had an appointment with two young men.
Diego may have gone to Amserdam, where he has an uncle, and had previously wanted to go to look for work.

1460DMITA - Wojciech Bodzioch this guy is actually polish, but maybe wanted a better life elsewhere?
Bodzioch was last seen in Italy in 1997.
Bodzioch left his village in Poland with a friend to move to Rome and work with the circus. He lived in Rome with his friend and with other Poles from the same village. Two months after he was there, he had an accident when an elephant picked him up and threw him. According to the friend, sometime later Wojciech left Rome, contacted him and said he was somewhere where he couldn't be found.

Ivan Ciavarro, originally from Termoli (Campobasso), attended the Faculty of Economics and Commerce in Perugia.
On June 21, 1997 he left the the Student House where he lived, taking only a backpack with some garments. His absence was noticed after a few days. In his room Ivan left his papers and phone, phone account closed on June 16. Searches in Umbria never led to any results. His mother has suggested that he may have taken refuge in a religious community, given his intense religious fervour.

Thanks dotr :)
I did some digging and found an italian site with loads of missing italians and others who have gone missing there Chi l'ha Visto - Scomparsi its a bit hard to go through all of them since there doesnt seem to be any filtering options there.
Anyway I wrote to them, since i didnt find that case on their site (they also have these kind of cases on their site - unidentified and possibly italians in other countries) so lets see if they publish this one there too and someone recognizes him :)
