Clinton, Mo., officer killed in the line of duty, law enforcement continues search for suspect

CLINTON, Mo. -- A manhunt is underway Monday morning for the suspect who shot and killed a Clinton, Mo. officer.

Sgt. Bill Lowe with the Missouri State Highway Patrol says around 10: 45 p.m. Sunday, Officer Gary Michael initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle for a registration violation. He stopped the driver along Green Street, near Henry County Sheriff's office. As Officer Michael exited the patrol vehicle to make contact with the driver, the driver fired a round towards the officer, striking Officer Michael.

According to Sgt. Lowe, Officer Michael tried to return fire, but it is unclear if the suspect was hit. Witnesses to the traffic stop recall hearing one shot followed by four more. The suspect then fled the scene in his vehicle. By 6:30 a.m., officers had located the suspect vehicle two blocks away, but the suspect remained on the run.

Man on run from police for more than 12 hours charged with murdering Clinton, Mo., police officer

He stopped McCarthy along Green Street, near Henry County Sheriff’s office. As Officer Michael exited the patrol vehicle to make contact with McCarthy, McCarthy fired a round towards the officer, striking Officer Michael.

McCarthy has been charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. According to online records, in July 2015, McCarthy was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm. FOX 4 continues to look into his history.

CLINTON, Mo. -- More than 24 hours after a Clinton, Mo., officer was shot and killed during a traffic stop, the man suspected of killing him remains on the run and a community continues to mourn.

Flags are lowered to half-staff Tuesday at the Henry County Sheriff's Office and underneath, a memorial grows in honor of officer Gary Michael who was shot and killed as he exited his patrol car late Sunday night.

A veteran even stopped by the memorial with his bugle and flowers to play "Taps" in memory of the officer who gave the ultimate sacrifice. (You can watch that touching moment in the video player below).

I agree! Surely someone is not dumb enough to harbor a criminal like McCarthy.

I am just worried someone helped him get out of town before they closed it off. Clinton is a lake town and many travelers go through there. There are also many roads that lead out of town in many directions.

Owner of trailer in Chilhowee, Mo. gladly turns over keys so police can search for suspected killer

CHILHOWEE, Mo. -- A SWAT operation in Chilhowee, Mo., ended with no arrests after about four hours Tuesday afternoon, as police and deputies filled the small town on a tip that Ian McCarthy might be there.

McCarthy, 39, is charged with the murder of Clinton, Mo., police officer Gary Michael, 37, Sunday night in Clinton.

Law enforcement moved in to the small town about 70 miles southeast of Kansas City after noon Tuesday and searched several homes in the area, but they concentrated on a trailer on West Walnut Street just south of Route 2.

Missouri State Highway Patrol says law enforcement received a tip that McCarthy was in a home. The owner of the mobile home gladly handed over the keys and told police how to get in.

CHILHOWEE, Mo. — Police surrounded a home in Chilhowee, Mo., after officers descended on the small town Tuesday afternoon in search of Ian McCarthy, believed to be the man who shot and killed Clinton, Mo. police officer Gary Michael Sunday night.


On Tuesday, August 8, 2017, law enforcement could be seen blocking off a road in Chilhowee.
About three hours later, FOX 4’s Shannon O’Brien reported the operation is over; SWAT went in but did not find McCarthy.

MSHP says accused Clinton cop killer Ian McCarthy has been arrested in Urich, MO

HENRY COUNTY, Mo. — The Missouri Highway Patrol says they’ve captured suspected cop killer Ian McCarthy on Tuesday night, he was arrested near Urich, Mo., at about 7:40 p.m. FOX 4 is working to gather more details about the arrest.

Urich is about 20-25 miles NE of Clinton.

Thankful they finally got him!
 
Sergeant Bill Lowe with the Missouri Highway Patrol said McCarthy, 39, was taken into custody near Bucksaw Marina.

"The incident occurred on Route U, which is just almost directly east of here about a mile south of Bucksaw Marina. He was taken into custody without incident, there was no struggle," Sgt. Lowe said during a news conference.

McCarthy was not found in Urich like was reported above.
