Turku, Finland Stabbing Attack Leaves Several Wounded: Police

One person is feared dead after a man armed with a knife stabbed several people in Finland before being shot by armed police.

Eyewitness reported hearing one or more gunshots and seeing at least one person lying dead on the ground.

In a video purporting to show the aftermath of the attack, a scream of 'Allahu Akbar' - Arabic for 'God is the greatest' - can be heard as people run in the street.

The Tabloid Ilta-Sanomat said six people are injured, one man and five women, and that a woman with a pram was attacked by a man with a large knife.

The police is searching for possible more perpetrators in Turku. People are asked to leave and avoid the center of Turku.

First emergency call came in at 16:02.

8 injured, two dead. Suspect shot, in custody.

Suspect was caught within 20 minutes of first call, shot in the leg.

National Bureau of Investigation in charge of investigation. Suspect's identity not known, Europol assisting.

At the moment police not declaring this as terrorist act. That may change as investigation proceeds.

This seemed to be misunderstood: 8 stabbed total, 6 injured, 2 dead.

Suspect possibly foreigner, immigration services also assisting police, according to interior minister.

Hospital rep now saying 9 were received. 1 dead, 8 injured. Two in intensive care.

All victims are adults, according to hospital rep.

Attacker not known to have any other weapons than a knife.

No further details are given about the detainees for investigative reasons.

The perpetrator's identity is known to the Police. He is an 18-year-old Moroccan citizen.

Geez. What's up with Morocco? It is a super fun , interesting place to visit. I know an expat from Europe who said it was a fabulous place to live.

New info from NBI briefing: in addition to prime suspect, 4 additional persons detained, also Moroccan citizens.

In addition, an international search warrant has been issued for one another suspect.

Main suspect entered Finland in 2016, had been in asylum process, according to police.

Two murder victims were female. Of injured victims 6 were women and 2 men. Age range of victims 15-67. (Police briefing)

Police: Early indication attacker in #Turku targeted women. Two men injured when intervening. 4 further arrests, one person at large.

Police said terrorism investigation triggered not by a single fact, but broadly related main suspect's conduct prior to attack.

This was just clarified that of the wounded one is Italian, one from Sweden and one from Great Britain.

Finnish Security Intel Service: attack profile was in line with terrorist threat assessment updated last June, no change in threat level.

Attack would have been very difficult to prevent, there were no actionable indicators.

I can think of no reasonable grounds why a Moroccan citizen would be accepted in an asylum procedure in Finland or any other EU country.

Leena Malkki, a counterterrorism expert and a lecturer at the University of Helsinki, said, “Finland has had attacks of indiscriminate violence, but none on this scale that also have political or religious motives.”

Friday’s attack, Dr. Malkki said Saturday, should not come as a surprise.

She said the Finnish Security Intelligence Service, which is participating in the investigation, had warned that ties between people in Finland and foreign terrorist networks had grown stronger in recent years and that radical Islamist propaganda in Finnish had been cropping up on the internet.

“These are signals that something may be brewing in Finland,” Dr. Malkki said. “But it is not clear how these developments relate to the attack on Friday.”

The security service released a report in June saying the Islamic State no longer saw Finland as neutral, and posed a threat to the country. The agency has identified about 350 people as persons of interest, an increase of 80 percent since 2012, it said.

The security service added that an increasing number of those people had “taken part in an armed conflict, expressed willingness to participate in armed activity, or received terrorist training.”

A Moroccan asylum seeker has admitted to stabbing two women to death in the Finnish city of Turku.

But Abderrahman Mechkah denied murder and said there was no terror motive to the attack, which also left eight people injured.

A regional court in Turku earlier ruled that the 18-year-old should be remanded in custody after the stabbing last Friday.

It also emerged that Mechkah had his application for asylum rejected before the attack.

Finnish police said on Sunday the Moroccan asylum seeker who has admitted killing two women in a knife attack last week has been identified after he gave officials a false name when he entered the country in 2016.

Police said the main suspect, who was previously named as 18-year-old Abderrahman Mechkah, was a Moroccan born in 1994.

“His identity has now been confirmed, so we know who we are dealing with,” Detective Chief Inspector Crista Granroth of the National Bureau of Investigation told Reuters.
