"The unusual crashes involving the ships — among the most high-tech in the world — prompted the Navy to initiate a broad investigation of the Pacific fleet, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said. Navy Adm. John Richardson, the chief of naval operations, will also call for a rare pause in operations across the entire Navy to assess safety protocols. The assessment will be done over the course of weeks."

I think the search and rescue is going to change to search and recover very shortly. And even then may have no results. RIP.
How very sad. The Navy definitely needs to find out what the heck is going on.

Can the training be this bad? The particular area where this incident occurred is known to be a heavily traveled, very narrow shipping lane. The kind of place you would want to proceed with an abundance of caution, putting your very best people on the bridge and on watch.

In the Fitzgerald collision, none of the top officers were on the bridge at the time of the collison. The Captain, the First Mate, and another officer were relieved of duty over the incident. This means their careers in the U.S. Navy are over. They will never get another command.

Remains of Navy sailors found on USS John S. McCain

Remains of some of the Navy sailors who went missing after a collision between USS John S. McCain and a tanker near Singapore were found in a compartment aboard the destroyer, Commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet Adm. Scott Swift said Tuesday.

Swift said "some remains" were found in sealed compartments during their search on Tuesday and Malaysian officials said they found one body, but were still in the process of identifying it.

Metro Detroiter could be among sailors missing in crash

Charles E. Ramirez, The Detroit News Published 9:41 a.m. ET Aug. 22, 2017

A Metro Detroit native could be among the 10 American sailors missing after a collision between the U.S.S. John S. McCain and an oil tanker in Southeast Asian waters.

Kenneth Smith, 22, could be one of the missing sailors, his mother, April Brandon, 40, of Milford, said Tuesday.

“On behalf of our entire family, I want to thank all those who have expressed concern and offered prayers and support as we await word from the Navy on our son, Kenneth,” Brandon said in a statement. “As you can imagine, this is a very difficult time for our family and we respectfully request that you honor our privacy. Thank you.”

She also said in a Facebook post that she had not yet received any word about her son as of Tuesday morning.

“Nothing is confirmed, though rumors are abundant,” her post said. “When I have something from the Navy, I will update you...

A Milford mother was told Monday that her son, Kenneth Smith, is one of 10 sailors missing after a Navy destroyer crashed off the coast of Singapore.

On Sunday, the USS John McCain crashed into an oil tanker. Smith has been confirmed as one of the sailors on the ship.

An investigation into the cause of the collision is being conducted by the U.S. Department of Defense.

April Brandon said in a Facebook post Tuesday morning that she has not received any official update from the Navy and that the “entire country is rooting” for her son...

"Adm. Scott Swift, commander of U.S. Pacific Fleet, Wednesday relieved the commander of Seventh Fleet, Vice Adm. Joseph Aucoin, due to a loss of confidence in his ability to command, according to a Navy press statement.

Rear Adm. Phil Sawyer, who has already been nominated and confirmed for the position and promotion to vice admiral, will assume command immediately, the Navy said.

Aucoin was relieved of command after four accidents involving Navy ships in the Pacific this year, the latest being the collision involving the guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain with the merchant vessel Alnic MC on August 21.

In a separate press release, the search for missing sailors assigned to the USS John S. McCain continues in the South China Sea and within the ship itself.

On Tuesday, Adm. Scott Swift, commander, Pacific Fleet, announced that the remains of a number of the 10 missing John S. McCain Sailors were discovered within the ship.

On Wednesday, U.S. Navy and Marine Corps divers continue to search the ship, seeking to locate more of the missing Sailors. In addition, they are conducting inspections of the damage to inform repair plans. More divers will join the effort Aug. 24."
