HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) _ A Long Island woman and her son were charged with savagely attacking the woman's boyfriend with a hammer and a 3-foot-long sword and leaving him near death, authorities said.

The attack happened early Friday at the Hempstead home that Ramona Chillous, 45, shares with her son Derrick Robinson, 23, Nassau police said.

Chillous got in an argument with her boyfriend, Sedrick Terry, 37, with whom she had been drinking, police said. She allegedly grabbed a hammer and struck him repeatedly in the head.

Robinson then went to his mother's assistance, picking up a large sword and slashing Terry repeatedly on the arms and abdomen, police said.
