Springfield woman found in crashed car may have died weeks ago

Chelsea Marie Dowler, 27, was found in a 1993 Dodge Dakota, which traveled off the roadway and struck a tree before coming to rest in a cornfield in Kingston Twp., according to the Delaware Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — Investigators are still working on the case of a young mother of two boys who was found dead in a cornfield by a clean-up crew Thursday.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Chelsea Marie Dowler, 27, was driving a 1993 Dodge Dakota pickup truck and apparently veered off the road into a tree near the 36/37 interchange on Interstate 71.

"I think she probably overdosed driving. There were no skid marks," said Janette Lanum, Dowler's mother.

Lanum said she and her sister got a surprise when they visited the scene of the crash in Delaware County on Sunday. They found Chelsea's angel statue she was given after her first child was still-born. "It was laying right there in the dirt," said Lanum, as she caressed the smoothe finish that had not a chip or crack.

Tyler said his sister was depressed after her child's death and eventually turned to Heroin."I think it kinda sucked the life right out of her."

What is less bright are questions they still have about why Chelsea had some fractures that appeared to be from before the crash. They also want detectives to find out why Chelsea didn't have her cell phone on her, and why it pinged from out of state. "It definitely does give us some closure. You know her missing and not knowing what is going on was terrifying."

Whether it was an overdose or someone harmed Chelsea, her mother says the sweetest girl ever is gone. "I do believe now that she is no longer suffering,," said Lanum.

The family said a special autopsy is being done.

BBM. Hmmm.... Sounds like an accident but also sounds like the family is conflicted about how she died. I wonder if she always kept the angel statue with her and it fell out of her truck or if someone who lived with her brought it to the site as a memorial? Cell phone pinging out of state is suspicious but maybe she traded her phone for heroin or maybe she was mugged before the accident and that's how she got the fractures? I hope LE really does investigate to make sure this was an accident.
