Pilot Presumed Dead in 2013 May Be Alive in Africa, Possibly Kidnapped

Pilot presumed dead has been found alive 4 years later, family says

MINNEAPOLIS – Four years ago, a missionary pilot from Minnesota disappeared during a flight from South Africa to Mali and was never heard from again.

Though no wreckage of the Beechcraft 1900C was ever found, South African authorities declared two months later that Jerry Krause had crashed and died.
Now his family says new evidence has caused the South African government to remove their official report and that Krause is actually alive and has been seen, CBS Minnesota reports.

The family even says the US government knows Krause’s whereabouts but the Department of Defense doesn’t have authorization to act on the information. According to the family’s “Find Jerry” Facebook page, their understanding is that President Trump or Vice President Pence would need to approve any rescue attempt.

Krause’s youngest daughter, Jessica, looked back on the day her life changed course from her home in Indianapolis.

“It’s a routine flight he’s done multiple times,” Jessica said. “I thought, ‘Just give it some time and it’s all going to be OK.’ Now it’s been close to four-and-a-half years.”

Krause served as a missionary pilot in Africa since 1989, where he raised his three kids with his wife, Gina.

On April 7, 2013, Krause planned to fly a new plane from South Africa to Mali. His last communication came from the island of Sao Tome where he stopped to re-fuel.
“We had airplanes doing searches, we had boat searches, we had a reward on the island for any information,” Jessica said.
Two months later, no plane debris, no black box and no answers.

The pilot’s family now say they have received an email from somebody claiming to be an ex-government operative, which has led them to believe he could be alive. They say an email from the South African Civil Aviation said the investigation into Krause’s April 7 2013 plane crash and subsequent disappearance was being reopened, although much of the statement was redacted. The ‘operative’, known only as Sydney, claims Krause was spotted at a private airport in Ambriz, Angola.

The pilot’s family now fear he is being held captive by a criminal gang, and possibly forced into weapons and drug smuggling.

The email read: ‘It was there, where we came in contact with a source that was linked to an organization that had been targeting the west coast of Africa. It is with is (sic) information we had learned that a plane and a pilot matching Jerry’s description had been seen at Ambriz. It is here where we knew Jerry was still alive. ‘I have seen for my own eyes that Jerry is still alive. As more information is released I will keep you informed.’

The information passed on by Sydney has not been independently verified and the family have hired private investigator Logan Clarke to look into it.

It was from an Angola airport that Ben Padilla disappeared with a Boeing 727 in 2003. In the years since there have been unconfirmed reports that he or the plane has been seen at out-of-the-way airports across Africa, and one theory around his disappearance is that he was effectively kidnapped and forced to fly the plane out of the country by drug smugglers.

Interesting case. These almost seem impossible. It's like people do really just vanish into thin air.

There is a thread here for Ben & John for anyone whose interested.
