Massive 8.0 earthquake off the coast of Mexico, 8 September 2017

Quake has been upgraded to an 8.2:
An earthquake of a magnitude 8.2 struck off the coast of Chiapas, Mexico, late on Thursday local time, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) said, citing USGS data.

Tsunami waves of more than 3 meters, or nearly 10 feet, above the tide level are possible along some coasts of Mexico, the PTWC said.
It added that tsunami waves of 0.3 to 1 meters above the tide level were possible for some coasts of the Cook Islands, Ecuador, French Polynesia, Guatemala and Kiribati.

:scared:

Lucy Jones, a seismologist in California who works with the U.S. Geological Survey, said such as quake was to be expected.

“Off the west coast of Mexico is what’s called the subduction zone, the Pacific Plate is moving under the Mexican peninsula,” she said. “It’s a very flat fault, so it’s a place that has big earthquakes relatively often because of that.”

I feel like I am stuck in a bad movie or nightmare. All this at once is unbelievable to me!

The news here said it was felt down in Austin, about 4 hours from us.

Sky News U.K death toll now 58. The strongest earthquake near Mexico for a century

So if it has big quakes frequently why is this the biggest in over a century? I'm confused...
I also completely rearrange my house last night after seeing this one happened.
We are near a fault and it freaked me out.

I hear you. We are in southern Oregon and the Cascadia Subduction Zone is expected to produce a 9.0+ quake sooner rather than later. All our furniture is low, nothing hangs on the wall over our bed, etc. I do need to update our disaster kits and have enough to last two weeks instead of three days though. We're not near the coast so we don't have to worry about a tidal wave at least. But I don't trust the steep hill we live on.

Let's stay fact-based in the discussion (i.e. no biblical prophecies, paranormal, etc). A couple of posts have been removed.

:tyou:

So hard to imagine the devastation here. Saw on CNN they are searching through rubble at a school and have recovered 20 bodies so far. Little children... :tears:
