I can't believe that sweet child is still missing. I really thought he'd be found hiding in the woods. This is so heartbreaking. Was he the target all along?

The boy's family identified him as five-year-old James Spoonamore.

Family tells WKYT on Friday morning, the boy's mother was beaten up by a family acquaintance, thrown over a cliff off Highway 89, then tied up and left for dead. The family says hikers found the woman screaming and called police.

The family says the boy's mother is in critical condition at UK Hospital.

James Spoonamore and his mother were kidnapped from their home by a family friend, according to James’ aunt Mary Batson.

Batson said James’ mother, Jessica Durham, was getting ready to go to the doctor and put her son in the child seat in their vehicle. The family friend arrived at the house and asked for help waking up Durham’s husband, David, who was in the house, Batson said.

Batson said 41-year-old Lonnie Belt, who was arrested Saturday night and placed in the Jackson County Detention Center, took mother and son. Belt is charged with kidnappings of an adult and minor, assault and tampering with physical evidence, according to jail records. But police have not identified him as a suspect.

At their home, James was in his mother's car when a family acquaintance, Lonnie Belt, showed up and beat his mother.

The mother's sister reports the following:
-The mom was "hit in the head two or three times her hands got tied behind her back...she got blind folded and then she was put in to a vehicle and she could hear James going, 'mommy you're bleeding,'."
-When the man stopped the vehicle, the mother's blindfold was taken off and her hands were untied.
-As the mother was trying to get away, Belt shoved her and she fell down a 100 foot drop off.

Investigators are not releasing a lot of information at this point, however family tells LEX 18 the boy's mother is in the hospital recovering from serious injuries. We're told the last time she saw James, he was in the woods and she doesn't know where he went.

Officials tell WKYT they are calling off the search for a missing boy in Jackson County, but they will not comment on why.

According to his arrest citation, Belt admitted that he got into an argument with Spoonamore about money and hit her in the head, tied her up, took her to the cliff and beat her again.

Search for missing boy called off in Jackson County

According to his arrest citation, Belt admitted that he got into an argument with Spoonamore about money and hit her in the head, tied her up, took her to the cliff and beat her again.

Investigators say Belt also admitted James was with Jessica when he took her to the cliff. No one has seen the child since.

Belt faces an evidence tampering charge because police say he painted over Jessica Spoonamore's blood at his residence.

Officials with KSP have been searching for James Spoonamore since Saturday. There appears to have been an update in the case, though officials will not specify what. They are having a briefing in Frankfort at 2 p.m.
