    Hurricane Irma - #3

Might as well start a thread - ugh!!

    He is at 967 now

When ranking hurricanes by strength, the obvious choice is to compare wind speeds. But since measurements of the most extreme winds are difficult to obtain, we instead compare hurricanes by their lowest central pressure, a measure that has a strong relationship to wind speed; generally, the lower the pressure in a hurricane, the stronger its winds.

The lowest pressures can be found here

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Atlantic_hurricane_records#By_pressure

No code has to be inserted here.

Collier County (Naples - Marco Island - Immokalee - Golden Gate area update):

No fatalities in Collier County have yet been reported as emergency and rescue crews continue to sift through debris and move fallen power lines.

Emergency vehicles are still out in Immokalee, East Naples, Marco Island, Golden Gate Estates and other areas of the county trying to get into buildings and homes that didn’t survive the storm.

Trailers and RVs have been wrenched apart, broken water mains sprayed into the air like 12-foot fountains. Trees and power poles barricaded driveways and neighborhoods.

Residents were not allowed to return to Marco Island as of 9 a.m. because of flooding of the roads and potential damage to bridges.

Crews are still tallying and surveying the damage in Marco Island, Immokalee and other parts of the county that fared the worst to either flooding or wind,.

“It’s very difficult to say what the damage is,” he said. “We know we’ve lost structures. We know we’ve lost roofs. It may take us two, three, four days to scout the county the county to get a good handle.”

The county is still urging, begging, residents to stay off roads and in shelters while crews open the streets.

Phone system failures have been common throughout the county. The 911 system is and has been operating throughout the storm.

Extensive damage was done to the county's sprawling sewage and drinking water system. Broken water mains caused the system to lose water pressure, which put the quality of the water at risk. The county has issued a boil water notice to all of the 300,000-plus residents who are connected to the water system throughout the unincorporated county.

There was still very little gas in Collier County, and almost no retailers had opened their doors.

more info on MARCO ISLAND (rescues underway):

Marco Island Police confirmed that there are parts of the island, like Barfield Drive, with 1 to 2 feet of standing water. Rescue missions are underway.

The National Guard has been called in to assist. At least seven people have been rescued.

"We are now sending crews out to rescue people who elected not to evacuate. We asked citizens who wanted to stay to let us know their physical addresses, so that we could check on them post storm. Today we rescued many of them. For example, seven persons were rescued from a house on Lamplighter Drive," which is straddled by canals.

Miami, Fort Lauderdale airports still closed

Miami International Airport and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport remained closed Monday, as the airports assessed damage.

After a damage assessment today, we will determine if passenger flights can resume on Tuesday.”

Fort Lauderdale Hollywood Airport remains closed and has not issued an update on when it will reopen. Passengers who left their cars in FLL’s parking garages may retrieve them after 10 a.m., when the curfew in Broward County is lifted.

CBS News correspondent Jericka Duncan reports a lot of the roads are impassable and most of the Atlantic Beach community, about 14,000 people, are without power.
Duncan says the city manager and mayor plan to assess the amount of damage Irma caused to the area, and hope to determine the safety for residents who decided to wait out the storm. *

Boat Guys - Gas Station Guy - Pole Guy updates:

    According to Reddit:

Boat Guys riding it out in Key West - No one has seen an updates from Ryan Stone or Dustin Greer of the boat S/V Andromedia. All cell and phone communications in the Lower Keys is out. Hopefully, they escaped the boat and are safe somewhere. Reddit users are really concerned about them so I am sure we'll have updates.

Gas Station Guy in the Lower/Middle Keys - had the only gas station open during the storm and was able to help the police/fire/rescue teams

Pole Guy - I assume they are talking about the guy that tied himself to a tree on Miami beach to feel the effects of the winds? I recall seeing a newscaster showing this.

Thank you Jersey for the Valrico photo. My daughter is alive and well. She says they didnt lose power. The home she rented when she moved to Fl just a couple months ago took very little damage. A big thanks to all members for all the links and info posted and more importantly, for making me feel I wasnt alone during such a scary couple of days.

St. johns River In Jacksonville breaches banks.

    Charlie Latham, Jax Beach Mayor:

"Some photos from our first look around town. Good news, the temporary dams we built on the dunes held. There were two breeches of the dunes (8th Ave North and 13th Ave South). But it appears the majority of the dunes held! This is the worst flooding I have seen in JB in 50 years. We have been told to expect additional storm surge between 12 and 2pm. Please remember to stay indoors so we can restore electrical and clear roads (as soon as it is safe)."

We are all ok! Lots of debris, trees down, fences down (one into the pool pump!) House survived as did we! Power is out. Wild night, still gusty. All in all I'd say we are lucky!

I just heard from friends who live year-round on a canal Marco Island (they evacuated) and that they received a couple of calls that their house is structurally intact and the water line did not make it into the house. *breathes extreme sigh of relief* I thought for sure Marco Island would be leveled after seeing the effects in the Caribbean.

I'm amazed at the integrity of the structures in South Florida. We should all build to these standards along the coast.
