And for the first time in 85 years, Puerto Rico is expected to suffer a direct landfall from a Category 4 hurricane.

Puerto Rico's governor has declared a state of emergency ahead of the landfall, which will likely happen Wednesday.

Puerto Rico's governor ordered evacuations Monday ahead of Tuesday's deteriorating conditions. "Our call is for people to evacuate areas that are prone to floods and landslides, in addition to vulnerable structures. It is time to seek refuge with a family member, friend, or move to a state shelter because rescuers will not go out and risk their lives once winds reach 50 miles per hour."

Maria's size means all of Puerto Rico will experience hurricane conditions.

Oh, no not again. There are still people cleaning up and without power from Irma.

This is a great comparison of Maria's path compared to Irma's path (the gold line). The forecast to day expects the path to intersect but head in opposite directions.

Thought I would look up the last cat4 to hit Puerto Rico 85 years ago....this is what I found. Hope much they are better prepared now.

The*1932 San Ciprian hurricane*was a powerful*Atlantic*tropical cyclone*that struck*Puerto Rico*during the*1932 Atlantic hurricane season. The ninth tropical cyclone, fourth hurricane and third major hurricane of the 1932 season,[1]*the San Ciprian Hurricane formed on September 25 east of the*Leeward Islands*and moved due west where it quickly gained hurricane strength a day later. After peaking as a*Category 4 storm, the hurricane crossed the entire length of*Puerto Rico*at Category*4 strength. The hurricane later struck the*Dominican Republicas a Category*1 storm. Weakened by its three landfalls, the storm continued to trek westward as a weak tropical storm before making its fourth and fifth landfalls in*Belize*and mainland*Mexico. The storm then dissipated on October 3.[1]
    Overall damage in*Puerto Rico*was catastrophic as the storm left $30*million (1932*USD, $443*million 2006*USD) and 225-257 fatalities.*

All three models today (GFS, Euro, GEM) forecast a possible occurrence that doesn't occur very often...

    Fujiwhara Effect

The*Fujiwhara effect, sometimes referred to as*Fujiwara interaction or binary interaction, is when two nearby cyclonic vortices orbit each other and close the distance between the circulations of their corresponding low-pressure areas.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fujiwhara_effect

The forecast indicates that Jose may make a turn South, pick up Maria, and take her out to sea with him. We can only hope....how convoluted.

How a Fujiwhara tango might save the Grand Strand from Hurricane Maria

    http://www.myrtlebeachonline.com/new...174011781.html

Hurricane Jose has spent more than a week dosey-doeing all alone in the greater Atlantic, but now forecasters say he may have found a dancing partner in Hurricane Maria and that tropical tryst could send one out to sea and one to the coast.

A bit different. Sandy moved around an*upper-level low*over the eastern United States and also to the southwest of a ridge over*Atlantic Canada, turning it to the northwest.

Jose and Maria are full fledge hurricanes doing a dance in the Atlantic.

7:33pm] Recon finds an estimated pressure of 926mb and surface winds of 160 mph in #Maria's northwestern eyewall.

Dominica to suffer direct hit tonight.

I've been there. Its a lovely island. Reminded me of the island they used in the King Kong movie with Jessica Lange. Its mountainous and gives an alure of the jungle. Can't imagine what it will look like tomorrow.... Sad
